Modric
The northern border station had become my refuge, even if I refused to call it that. I pushed the warriors harder than necessary that morning, barking orders during drills until sweat poured down their faces and muscles trembled. “Again!” I shouted, circling the group as they sparred in the dust. Blades clashed, wolves growled in partial shifts, and the air filled with the scent of exertion. They were exhausted, but so was I–and exhaustion was the only thing keeping thoughts of her at bay.
Kylian watched from the sidelines, arms crossed, his expression growing darker with every passing hour. When we finally called a break, he cornered me near the treeline, voice low enough that the others wouldn’t hear.
“You’re using patrol duties as an excuse to stay away from the pack house, Modric. This isn’t like you.”
I wiped sweat from my brow, refusing to meet his eyes. “There’s been unusual rogue activity. Reports of scouts near the ridges. I need to be here.”
Kylian snorted. “The reports are minor. A few tracks, nothing that justifies the Alpha personally camping out here every night. The pack needs you at home. Your Luna needs you at home.”
The word Luna hit like a punch. Mary Ann. Her soft curves pressed against me, the breathy moan she’d made when my tongue slid against hers, the way her full body had yielded so perfectly. I clenched my jaw, heat surging through me despite the cool forest air. “Stop discussing Mary Ann. That’s an order.”
My voice came out sharper than intended. Kylian raised an eyebrow but held his ground. “You can’t run forever. The bond-”
“I said enough!” I snarled, my wolf surging close to the surface. He backed off, but the damage was done. The restlessness inside me only grew. My wolf paced endlessly, agitated by the growing distance from its mate. It didn’t understand why we were out here when she was back at the house–warm, soft, waiting. I didn’t understand it either, but admitting that would unravel everything.
Night fell hard at the border station. I lay on the narrow cot in the commander’s quarters, staring at the wooden ceiling. Sleep wouldn’t come. Every time I closed my eyes, the memory slammed into me: Mary Ann in my arms, lips swollen and eager, that soft, desperate moan vibrating against my mouth as I deepened the kiss. The way her generous breasts had crushed against my chest, the lush give of her hips, the heat of her body molding to mine. I was hard again, aching, cursing into the darkness. My hand drifted down before I stopped myself. No. I wouldn’t give in to this
By the next evening, the tension had become unbearable. I found myself driving toward Velvera’s cottage on the edge of the territory, telling myself it was just a quick check–in. She deserved better than my silence after everything. But the moment I stepped inside and she greeted me with that familiar smile, something felt… off.
“Modric,” she breathed, wrapping her arms around my neck. Her body was slim and toned against mine, her scent light and floral. It should have comforted me. Instead, it felt wrong. Too sharp. Too different from the warm, wildflower richness that clung to Mary Ann.

“Something’s different with you,” she said quietly. “You’ve been distant since the wedding. Is it her? The alliance girl?”
She reached for me again, pressing closer, her fingers trailing lower in clear invitation. “Stay. Let me help you forget for a while.”
