The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 640

Chapter 640: No, Tristan. He Isn’t.

Fin watched it happen from the outside.

The wind shifted.

He watched the scent reach Lucian the way a wave reaches shore, the wind carrying it across the courtyard, up the aisle, past the white flowers and the two hundred faces and the officiant with his heavy robes, delivering it directly into the lungs of a man who was the last person this was supposed to happen to.

He breathed through his nose.

Once. That was all it took. One inhale through the wrong passage at the wrong second on the wrong day.

Fin watched himself break.

The breaking was invisible. That was the thing about Lucian Moon and about Finnick Shadowclaw and about every version of the man whose soul wore these faces: the breaking happened inside, behind composure that was load-bearing, beneath a surface that held because the holding was a skill he had been perfecting since he was eight years old and standing in a borrowed corridor being told his parents were dead.

Nobody saw it. Nobody could see it. The man who had spent his life ensuring that his pain was a private enterprise was ensuring it now, at the worst possible moment, in the most public possible venue, with a wolf inside his chest howling loud enough to crack his skull.

"You having tummy problems, bro?" Tristan asked.

Lucian couldn’t answer. His lungs were full of a scent they refused to release and his jaw was locked against a sound that would have ended every friendship and every brotherhood and every piece of the architecture he had spent years building.

"Did the shots hit you wrong? You look like you swallowed a live fish."

He looked like a man whose world was ending. Tristan couldn’t see it because Tristan’s eyes were full of light and the light was aimed at the corridor entrance and the corridor entrance was about to produce the woman they both loved.

River appeared.

White. All of it. Head to hemline. A gown that caught the light the way her hair caught light, as if the fabric understood its role was supporting and had made peace with the arrangement. Her white hair was down, curled in loose waves threaded with white roses. Her pink eyes were bright, luminous, glowing.

She was the most beautiful thing Lucian had ever seen, and the beauty was a blade, and the blade was the sharpest one he’d ever been cut by because the cut was a smile aimed at another man.

She saw Tristan. Her composure cracked. The princess dissolved. The girl on the rock surfaced, and the smile that broke across her face was so full and so bright that Tristan made a sound in the back of his throat, and the sound was audible to everyone in the first three rows, and Lucian heard it the way a soldier hears the final shot.

Atlas delivered her to the front. Placed her hand in Tristan’s. The transfer carried the weight of a king who had watched a ten-year-old boy earn the right to this woman over a decade of choosing.

Lucian watched the hand he had held on a bench, the hand he had repositioned on a practice sword, the hand that had gripped his sleeve while he carried her through a forest at eight years old, be placed into the palm of his brother. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

The officiant began.

"We gather before the Gods and the light of Aelindris to witness the bonding of Prince Tristan Aelindor and Princess River Aelindor..."

Lucian was breathing through his mouth. Because breathing through his nose would bring the scent back and the scent would finish what it started. His wolf was slamming against his control with a violence that was going to leave bruises on the inside of his skull for weeks.
