Dark-haired. Beautiful in the way that expensive weapons are beautiful: polished, precise, and designed to do damage. Her dress was red, which at a bonding ceremony in Aelindris was either a declaration of war or the worst fashion decision in recorded history, and her face said she was aware of both interpretations and had selected the one she preferred.
"Stop the ceremony."
Vesper Willow’s voice carried across the courtyard with a projection that would have made stage performers weep. Two hundred Fae nobles turned with expressions that ranged from confusion to alarm to the particular facial configuration of people witnessing a diplomatic incident unfolding in real time.
"You are marrying your sister, Tristan."
The word detonated.
Lucian stepped forward. The wolf king moved before the thought formed, his reflexes defaulting to protection, regardless of whose protection he was providing, regardless of the fact that the woman he was defending had a star on her neck that belonged to his brother.
"She was adopted, lady." His voice cut through the gasps with the authority of an Alpha addressing a crowd. Calm. Certain. Carrying the weight of a man who had been present for every relevant fact and whose relevant facts were older and more thorough than anything this woman could produce. "They grew up together. They share a household, a father, and a history. They share no blood."
Vesper dismissed him. A flick of her gaze, the way a queen dismisses furniture that has developed opinions.
She turned back to Tristan. "You know what I am to you. You can feel it now. The pull."
The courtyard went silent. The sea was loud.
Lucian watched Tristan’s face. Watched the freeze. The pupils dilating. The jaw locking. The involuntary shift of a man whose body had received instructions his heart hadn’t authorized.
He recognized it because his body had done the same goddamn thing ten minutes ago.
Tristan was feeling a fated pull. A Fae mechanism. A force that had been activated by the woman in the red dress, and the activation was visible in every line of the prince’s body.
Then River’s hand flew to her mouth. Her pink eyes filled. The tears arrived fast, faster than composure could catch them.
She waited. One second. Two. Three.
Tristan didn’t turn.
She ran.
Lucian watched River turn from the altar and sprint down the aisle. White dress catching the afternoon light. White hair streaming behind her. Roses falling from her curls one by one, landing on the stone in a trail that marked the path of a woman leaving the man she loved at an altar with his mouth closed.
His wolf didn’t scream mate this time. His wolf screamed something older, something that predated the word and carried a weight that the word was insufficient to hold.

Tristan came to his senses. Ordered the arrest. Ran after River.
