The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 645

Chapter 645: He Who Held The Gate

Lucian Moon’s arms tightened across his chest.

His jaw set. His gold eyes went steady, carrying a decision that Fin recognized because Fin had made it himself: the decision to protect the woman he loved regardless of the cost, regardless of the mechanism, regardless of what any goddess or elder or fated tie demanded.

"Cage or kill," Tristan repeated. "Those are the options. Pick the one the histories will forgive."

The room had no response.

Lucian’s mouth curved. Just slightly. Just enough for Fin to see.

Atta boy, Tristan, the curve said. Burn the whole fucking thing down.

✦✦✦

The vision compressed again. Hours folded into seconds, days into minutes.

Fin watched through Lucian’s experience as the corruption spread. As the dark veins crawled up Tristan’s neck, his face, his hands. As the healers worked and failed and worked again with diminishing returns.

Lucian felt every minute of River’s vigil through the matebond.

She stayed at Tristan’s side through every seizure, every blackout, every detonation of corrupted magic. The matebond transmitted her exhaustion, her terror, her refusal to leave, her grief. Every emotion arrived in Lucian’s chest with the fidelity of a signal that had been designed to carry the full spectrum of a mate’s experience, and the spectrum right now was terror and love and the specific, grinding desperation of a woman watching the man she chose die in front of her.

✦✦✦

General Aldren Willow moved the Eastern Alliance army to the palace gates at dawn.

Four thousand soldiers. Fae-armored. Dark-magic augmented. Positioned in siege formation along the eastern approach to Aelindris. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Lucian received the intelligence through a scout wolf who arrived at his traveling camp bleeding from three wounds and carrying the scent of dark Fae on every inch of his fur.

The Alpha of the Northern Realm read the situation in four seconds.

Army at the gates. Atlas likely to accept parley because Atlas was Atlas and kings who refused parley lost the moral authority to hold crowns. False flag. Ambush. The geometry of a trap designed to look like diplomacy, and the man walking into it was the father of the woman whose grief was still thrumming through Lucian’s matebond like a bass line that refused to resolve.

"How many wolves can we have at Aelindris in two hours?" Lucian asked his Beta.

"Three hundred. The rest are a day’s march behind."

"Three hundred. Move."

The command was Alpha-absolute, carrying a frequency that bypassed discussion and arrived at compliance. Three hundred wolves shifted mid-word, the camp dissolving around Lucian as bodies became animals and animals became a force aimed south at a speed that only wolves driven by their Alpha’s desperation could sustain.

Lucian didn’t explain the urgency to his men. The Alpha’s instinct was law, and the Alpha’s instinct was screaming a warning he couldn’t articulate, a pull toward Aelindris so violent it had overridden every obligation his kingdom demanded.

Fin moved beside him in the space between real and remembered.

They came through the northern approach at a dead sprint and found the palace under siege.

The words tore out of him with a force that Fin felt in his own throat. Go get your wife. Your wife. Said by the man whose matebond connected to the same woman. Said without hesitation. Said with the full knowledge that sending Tristan toward River meant sending the wrong man and staying behind and holding a gate with three hundred wolves while the woman he loved was in danger and the man he was protecting could reach her and he could never, ever, be the one who did.
