The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 646

Chapter 646: Wrong Alpha, Wrong Fucking Day

The eastern gate became a meat grinder and Lucian Moon was the blade.

Dark Fae soldiers hit his line in waves. Augmented. Wrong. Their eyes carried the black-veined glow of warriors who had traded something essential for power, and the power made them fast and the power made them strong and the power made absolutely zero difference against an Alpha whose mate was on a battlefield he couldn’t reach.

Lucian’s sword opened the first soldier from hip to shoulder. The second lost his head before the first hit the ground. The third managed a swing that Lucian caught on his forearm, the dark blade biting into muscle, and the wolf king killed him with his free hand, driving a dagger through the man’s eye socket with the casual brutality of a predator whose patience had been exhausted three corpses ago.

Fin watched him fight.

He’d seen Alphas in combat. He’d seen Garrett lead a charge with the tactical geometry of a man who read battlefields the way scholars read texts. He’d seen his own hands do things in darkness that daylight would have refused to witness.

Lucian was different.

There was no elegance. There was no geometry. There was a wolf whose mate was in danger and whose body had been given violence as a substitute for rescue, and the violence was total, efficient, and carrying the specific temperature of a man who would kill every soldier on this side of the gate if it meant the woman on the other side stayed breathing.

His wolves held beside him. Three hundred of them, shifted and savage, tearing through dark Fae with the coordinated fury of a pack following an Alpha whose desperation had become their own. The gate held. The courtyard held. Every inch of stone that Lucian’s feet touched became a line that Willow’s forces could never cross.

Then the matebond delivered the first blow.

Fin felt it before Lucian’s body registered it. A shockwave. Grief so pure and so total it had weight, density, mass. River’s grief, transmitted through the matebond at full amplitude, and the grief was the specific grief of a woman whose father’s blood-sense had just gone dark.

Atlas was dead.

Lucian staggered. Mid-swing. His sword arm faltered for a fraction of a second, the grief hitting his nervous system like a bolt of lightning, scrambling the signals between brain and muscle. A dark Fae blade missed his throat by two inches because the soldier wielding it was too slow to capitalize and Lucian was too experienced to stay staggered.

He corrected. Killed the soldier. Killed the one behind him. Kept fighting.

But the matebond was relentless. It delivered River’s terror. It delivered the particular frequency of a woman sprinting toward a dead father on a field she had no business being on, fueled by a grief that overrode every survival instinct her body possessed.

Lucian’s jaw clenched so hard his back teeth cracked.

She was on that field. Running. Alone. Without guards.

And Lucian was here. At a gate. Holding stone for a prince while his mate ran toward the same violence he was holding the stone against.

The mathematics of it were obscene. He was fighting to keep the gate so Tristan could reach her, and every second he fought was a second she spent unprotected on a field where her father lay dead and augmented soldiers hunted the tree line. The gate mattered. The gate was the line between a siege and a slaughter. He knew that. His tactical mind confirmed it every time his emotional mind screamed at him to abandon it.

So he stayed.

He stayed and he fought and the matebond fed him every second of River’s terror with the fidelity of a system designed by a goddess who apparently believed that torture was a feature rather than a bug.
