Everything went black.
The darkness was total. No ground. No air. No boundaries. The forest and the palace and the sea and the sky were gone, replaced by a void so complete that the concept of direction ceased to apply.
Fin didn’t know if he was dead or alive or if this was the space between, the threshold where souls waited for the gods to decide which side of the door they belonged on.
Then the boundary between Lucian and Finnick dissolved.
He felt it happen. The two identities, the wolf king and the Alpha heir, the First and the future, overlapped and merged and became a single thing standing in darkness. The thing had two names and one soul and the soul was screaming.
"RIVER!"
The name tore through the void. His voice. Lucian’s voice. Both voices. The same voice wearing different throats across ten thousand years, calling for the same woman who wore different names and the same eyes and the same soul.
"SERENA!"
The second name ripped out of him involuntarily, because the soul didn’t distinguish between lives and the grief didn’t distinguish between names and the man standing in darkness was every version of himself calling for every version of her.
Silence.
"NATALIA!"
The void absorbed the names and gave nothing back. The darkness was patient and complete and carried the specific quality of a universe that had heard the call and was choosing whether to answer.
Then the light appeared but Lucian Moon was not there. Fin could feel it. His soul was someplace else and what remained was a ghost version of himself watching the person he had been calling for.
River stood alone and then a voice spoke.
"Daughter of my light."
The voice resonated through every atom of the void, through Fin’s chest, through the place where Lucian’s heart had stopped and Fin’s was still beating ten thousand years in the future.
"What has been done was never fated."
The light pulsed once, warm and slow.
"The three gods who watch over your soul have convened. What occurred on this field was a corruption of divine law so grievous that the fabric of fate itself has been wounded by it. A king was slain under sacred parley. A prince was consumed by manufactured darkness. A wolf king was killed through a matebond he never had the chance to honor. And you, daughter, were taken from the world before your thread was finished weaving."
Fin heard the words a matebond he never had the chance to honor and his chest cracked open.
Because that was the summary. That was the epitaph. Years of silence and loyalty and holding, reduced to a single sentence by a goddess whose brevity was more devastating than any eulogy Fin could have written.
"We are giving you a second passage. You will wake where the ceremony began, carrying the knowledge of what occurs if you do not act. This is the mercy of the gods, granted once, never again, and never spoken of to mortal ears."
"Chosen love is powerful, but I cannot undo a Fae tie blessed by fate. You know what must be done, daughter."

Fin stared at him so long the word alive stopped sounding like a word and started sounding like a prayer.
