River’s pulse through the connection, the frequency that carried her pain and her grief and her fury, was fading. The way a candle fades when the wax runs out. The way a voice fades when the breath behind it is gone.
"No."
The word left Lucian’s mouth at a whisper.
He killed the soldier in front of him. Mechanical. The motion was reflex, his body completing an action his mind had abandoned three seconds ago.
The matebond flickered again. Weaker.
Dark magic. On the other end of the connection. Fin could feel it through the echo, a cold, corrupt pulse that had wrapped around River’s signal like a fist closing around a flame.
General Willow had reached her.
The math collapsed. The gate. The line. The tactical necessity of holding stone so a prince could reach a field. All of it dissolved in the face of a matebond transmitting the murder of his mate in real time.
Lucian surged forward. Toward the eastern gate’s exit. Toward the field. Toward her.
He made it four steps.
The connection to her tore from his soul.
The sensation defied description, but Fin lived through it anyway.
It felt like a rope being ripped from his chest. A physical, tangible thing that had been woven into the architecture of Lucian’s body being yanked out by the roots. The matebond, the fated tie the Moon Goddess had confirmed at a ceremony Lucian was never supposed to attend, the connection that had screamed MATE while he held rings in a pocket, the thread that had carried her grief and her laughter and her pleasure and her terror for weeks, severed.
Lucian’s knees hit the stone.
His sword fell from his hand. The clatter was loud in a way that combat sounds are never loud, carrying the specific acoustics of a weapon being dropped by a man who would never pick it up again.
Every muscle seized simultaneously. His body arched against the cobblestone with a force that cracked the rock beneath him. Dark veins erupted across his skin, crawling up his neck, his face, his arms. The corruption that had killed River was traveling through the matebond like current through a wire, and the wire terminated in the chest of a wolf king on a gate a mile away.
Fin dropped beside him.
His ghost-hands reached for Lucian’s shoulders and passed through. Through muscle and bone and the dark veins spreading across skin that had been warm five seconds ago and was going cold.
"Stay with me. STAY WITH ME."
Lucian’s eyes were open. Gold fading. The color draining outward from his irises the way color drains from a sunset when the light source drops below the horizon.

"River."
