The group peeled off their rain gear, changed into dry clothes, and gathered in Hughie’s apartment.

There was nothing left to scavenge in the city, so they had gone back to the villa district this time. The houses were already picked clean, but they weren’t there for that anyway.

They went deeper into the mountains, hoping to run into wild boars again.

Instead, they found a reservoir.

It had been stocked with fish. With the flooding, a lot of the fish had spilled out, drifting through the creeks and channels down the mountain.

The water was murky. You couldn’t see a thing.

Cola found the fish by scent and movement, diving in and biting them out one by one. There was no telling how many had already washed away.

But one thing was certain: there were still plenty left in the reservoir.

“If we can figure out a way to catch them,” Jeremy said, already thinking ahead, “we could trade with the Lindberg guy again. We might not have to worry about food for years.”

Even so, they would have to move fast. There was nothing left in the city. Sooner or later, people would start searching the mountains.

If someone else found the reservoir first, they would get nothing.

The terrain was dangerous, too. There was water everywhere, with uneven footing and hidden drops. There was no way they could rely on Cola to grab fish one at a time.

Jeremy muttered, “Man, if we had some kind of fishing device…”

The fish were right there, but they couldn’t reach them. It was frustrating as hell.

“Hughie, you think you could build one?” Jeremy asked.

“No chance,” came the answer.

A whole reservoir full of fish…

Even Nicole felt tempted. She only had about 100 fish in storage, and Cola loved eating them. It was nowhere near enough.

“Gabrielle mentioned something,” Nicole said. “Her grandson, Victor, works at a physics institute. Maybe he’d know something.”

Fishing tech like that relied on ultrasonic principles. If anyone understood the theory, it would be him.

Zeph glanced at her. “Can he be trusted?”

“I think the Goodmans are decent people,” Nicole said. “Victor’s a good kid, too. We can at least ask.

Worst case, nothing came of it. They wouldn’t suffer any loss.

The others agreed.

The Goodmans didn’t know where the reservoir was, anyway. Victor might not even be able to build anything,

either.

There was no reason not to try.

So, they decided to go ask.

But Mary lived next door to the Goodmans, and she was always watching, so Nicole couldn’t show up herself. The. guys weren’t a good idea, either.

Mary had already tried flirting with Zeph to get something to eat. There was no guarantee that Jeremy or Hughie would ignore her the same way.

And so, they sent Beatrice.

Nicole had guessed right. The moment Beatrice knocked on the Goodmans’ door, the neighboring door swung

open.

Mary stepped out with a sweet and innocent smile on her face. “Hey, B.”

In the dark hallway, with no power and her face gaunt from hunger, she looked more like a ghost than anything

else.

Beatrice didn’t even try to hide her disgust. “Don’t call me that. We’re not close.”

Mary didn’t seem bothered. “So what are you doing here this late? Looking for Gabrielle?”
