Chapter 101
Beatrice didn’t even blink at Mary’s fake-friendly invitation.
She shoved Mary hard, sending her stumbling back several feet before slamming into the wall with a dull thud.
“Get lost. If I were a guy, you would’ve been dead already.”
Mary was out there selling herself, but she was still full of energy. It was as if she fed off men just to
keep going.
And the nerve on her! That woman had no shame at all.
By the time the people in Faye’s apartment heard Mary crying and rushed out, Beatrice was already heading upstairs.
Back inside, Beatrice vented to Nicole.
“The second I hear her putting on that sweet voice, my skin crawls. She’s a damn snake, always pushing men to take the hit for her. I roughed her up just now. If she’s stupid enough to come at us, we’ll take her out while we’ve got the chance. Otherwise, she’s gonna cause trouble sooner or later.”
Nicole nodded. “We need a plan.”
Too bad Mary had gotten smarter. She kept herself tucked safely behind the men now, barely showing
her face.
They had planned to let her get worn down by the apocalypse, but she just had to pick a fight.
Fine. The blade was already sharpened.
Not long after, Victor came up, helping Gabrielle along.
Nicole didn’t bother dancing around it. “Can you build a fishing device?”
Victor paused, adjusting his glasses as he thought it through for a few minutes. “I probably can, but I don’t have enough materials on hand.”
He was a full-on physics nerd. His place was packed with spare parts, some bought, some salvaged from junkyards. He had even won awards for his inventions and topped national physics competitions.
He was the kind of kid every parent bragged about.
“Can you get what you need?” Nicole asked.
“The lab building should have it. I’d just need to modify a few things.”
The materials room was on the eighth floor. It probably hadn’t flooded yet, but there was no telling if it had already been picked clean.

The research institute wasn’t too far. About six miles if they cut straight through.
Nicole shot Zeph a look, silently asking if this was worth the risk.
He thought it over, then turned to Victor. “I can take you there.”
Victor might’ve been a homebody, but he wasn’t clueless. There was no way someone was burning fuel
in the middle of the night just to catch a couple of fish.
Things at home were already tight. He had to bargain. “If I build it, I get a share, right?”
That was more than fair. Nicole would’ve done the same in his position.
“The water’s this deep. Are you sure your device will even work?”
“If there are fish, I can catch them.”
It was just a matter of tuning the ultrasonic frequency. That part was easy.
For the sake of having steady access to fish, Nicole agreed. “Deal, but this stays between us.”
After everything they had been through, the Goodmans knew better than to talk.
“How long will it take?”
Making a fishing device was nothing to Victor. He didn’t hesitate. “As long as I’ve got the materials, I can finish it tonight.”
There was no point waiting. Zeph went to grab the motorboat.
The Goodmans didn’t live on the 18th floor, and Nicole didn’t want anyone in the building catching on. No need to stir up trouble. She had Gabrielle and Victor head downstairs first.
Nicole insisted on going along. Zeph didn’t argue.
She told Hughie’s group to cut the fish into chunks and salt them down. When she got back, they would coat them in batter and fry them. That would keep for days.
