Chapter 99

Nicole knew it was Gabrielle who had asked Victor to come warn them. It hadn’t changed much, but she appreciated the gesture.

So, she waived three treatment fees and gave Gabrielle half a bottle of herbal liniment. It wasn’t much, just about two ounces, but in times like this, it was already generous.

And yeah, there was some goodwill in it, too.

Everyone had their eyes on the 18th floor. You couldn’t count on people to be kind. If the Goodmans were willing to pass along information, that alone could save trouble.

“Gabrielle, it’s getting colder these days. Your back can’t handle damp or cold,” Nicole said. “Massage it with the liniment at night, then wrap up in a blanket. It’ll heal faster.”

In her last life, Gabrielle had frozen to death. Only Victor survived, and not for long.

This time, Nicole had given her a warning. Whether she made it or not depended on her.

“Thank you, Nicole. I’ll try it tonight.”

Then Gabrielle brought up another patient.

“The family upstairs… Their kid’s covered in eczema. Scratched himself raw. They tried going to the hospital, but there’s no medicine. They want to bring him to you.”

She hesitated.

“They don’t know you well, so they didn’t come directly. They asked me to check first. Don’t worry. They’re decent people. They’re not mixed up with Oliver. Didn’t show up during that mess, either.”

Eczema was complicated. Needle therapy alone wouldn’t fix it, and herbal treatments worked slowly.

Nicole had medicine in her storage space, but there was no way she was taking it out.

“Without meds, it’s hard to treat,” she said. “The best thing is to stay active, sweat it out, and build immunity. It’ll improve over time.”

Gabrielle didn’t push it.

She wrapped the bottle in cloth and tucked it into her pocket, careful not to let the smell give anything away.

Before leaving, she paused.

“Did your dog bite someone? That girl next door has been stirring things up again,” she added. “People aren’t looking too friendly.”

Kids these days were always scheming.

That girl called Nicole her classmate, but talked trash behind Nicole’s back and eyed her supplies.

Those guys had joined the mob that day, and now, they were still badmouthing Nicole.

If it were Gabrielle, even if she had supplies, she would rather feed them to a dog than hand them over to people like that.

After Gabrielle left, Nicole shut the door and stepped into the storage space.

The vegetables in the black soil garden were ready. She pulled them out, then carried the planters onto the balcony and sat down on a small stool to dig up the potatoes.

The soil here was rich. Each pot was packed with golden potatoes, round and full.

Nicole had dozens of planters. She harvested over 100 pounds total. The kind of satisfaction she felt was something you couldn’t put into words.

The rabbits didn’t eat potato leaves, so she tossed them back into storage as fertilizer. She replanted the pots, then shifted them back into the garden.

A knock came at the door.

Cola was back. He was decked out in his gear, standing tall at the entrance, two black plastic bags clenched in his teeth.
