The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 109

Chapter 109

Nicole had no complaints about the deal. Cola loved the stuff.

So just like that, a little over 100 pounds of fish turned into 20 cans of freeze-dried pet food.

Gordon’s group was happy with their purchase.

They had been living off dog food for so long that they were sick of it. Sixteen hundred pounds of fish sounded like a lot, but with that many people in their complex, it wouldn’t last as long as you would think.

“Derek,” Gordon asked, “you got more?”

Derek didn’t relax. “How much are you thinking?”

“What if we trade every three days? Two thousand pounds each time?”

Derek shut it down immediately. “No. If you want it, we can trade tomorrow and the day after. That’s all.

Take it or leave it.”

The reservoir was already overflowing. Fish were getting swept away every day, and there was no telling when someone else might find it.

It was better to grab what they could while they still had the edge.

If the whole complex was eating fish, there was no need for anyone to hide it.

Gordon turned to his people, they talked it over, then nodded. “Alright. Tomorrow night. Same place. You bring what you’ve got. We’ll take it.”

Daytime was too risky. Night was when it was safest.

After the deal was done, both sides pulled back.

Nicole and the others stayed cautious, making sure no one followed before heading back toward the complex, hauling 500 pounds of dog food, plus everything they had traded with that rough group earlier.

It had been a good day.

Once the excitement wore off, they realized there was a serious problem.

They had been so focused on trading that they forgot the fishing device was out of power.

“What now?” Derek looked frustrated. “We already promised Gordon.”

No way they were walking away from that much dog food.

Jeremy thought it through. “What if we go back to Weasel and have him charge it?”

The price was steep. Weasel demanded 200 pounds of fish just for one charge.

That wasn’t even the real concern. If they saw the device, they might try to take it. Once they figured out

how it worked, it wouldn’t take long to trace it back to the reservoir.

So far, those people had played fair, but this was the apocalypse. If anything was unpredictable, it was human nature.

Maybe Weasel hadn’t made a move yet because he was just fattening them up.

Nicole had no shortage of ways to charge things, but she couldn’t exactly reveal that.

Then Zeph dropped it out of nowhere. “I’ll handle the charging. Don’t worry about it.”

With the kind of presence he carried, no one dared ask how he planned to do it.

Forget the Goodmans. Even Hughie’s group said nothing. Even if they did ask, Zeph wouldn’t answer.

People were like that. When faced with something mysterious, they instinctively kept their distance.

Zeph was nothing if not mysterious. Everyone understood that curiosity could get you killed. The moment someone pushed too far, that fragile balance between them could shatter, and nobody knew if they would even make it out alive.

Hughie’s group might joke around all the time, but they weren’t stupid. They knew where they stood. They didn’t get the same treatment from Zeph that Nicole did.
