Chapter 112

Nicole raised the binoculars and scanned the water.

The people on the motorboat were clearly trouble. The ones on the rafts looked different: thin and hollow- eyed, their faces tight with hunger. Most likely, they had been forced to cling to the gang just to survive.

They had knives, clubs, and metal rods, but probably no guns.

At this distance, the nail gun and crossbow lost accuracy and power. Their advantage was slipping.

Nicole wasn’t worried about a direct charge. What she didn’t want was a standoff.

And that was exactly what was happening.

The tattooed men held back, pushing the raft group forward instead. The people on the rafts were scared too, but hunger had worn them down. Slowly, they started paddling closer.

Zeph spoke calmly. “As long as they don’t get too close, ignore them. Keep working.”

Hughie and the others snapped back to it, hauling fish out of the water.

Now that the reservoir had been exposed, today might be their last real chance. They needed to pull in as much as possible.

As for the troublemakers, they could deal with them later. There was no point wasting time right now.

After the earlier chaos, a lot of fish had drifted farther out. The raft group spread out, scooping them up

from a distance.

“I got one, I got one. We’ve got food!”

“Same here!” 1

Excitement broke through their exhaustion.

Some didn’t even wait. They cut the fish open right there and started eating.

Unprocessed fish reeked, but it could keep you alive, which was a lot better than chewing on leaves.

Some of them ate like it was the best thing they had ever tasted, scales stuck to their lips, blood on their

hands.

Nicole stood on the motorboat, watching them, her face unreadable.

They kept fishing. Everyone focused on the work while Nicole stood guard, nail gun ready. The modified gun could reach about 100 feet, but beyond 50, the impact dropped off hard.

Greed crept in again.

The raft group tested the distance, inching closer bit by bit. Picking off stray fish wasn’t enough anymore. They wanted more.

Nicole didn’t say a word. The moment one raft crossed into range, she raised the nail gun and fired.

She missed the heart but hit a shoulder. Then she aimed at the raft.

They panicked, scrambling backward, putting distance between them as fast as they could.

“Please!” someone shouted. “We haven’t eaten in days. Just let us take a little. The kids at home are starving.”

“You can keep the good stuff. We’ll just take what’s left. We won’t fight you for it.”

Nicole’s voice cut through the noise. “Back off!”

No matter how they begged, she didn’t budge.

Reluctantly, they pulled back.
