Chapter 113
The two groups just about cleared the area. Fewer and fewer fish were surfacing, and Zeph’s group had already hauled in close to 3,000 pounds.
Right on cue, the fishing device died.
The wind picked up hard. The rafts started drifting, pushed off course.
Nicole’s motorboat stayed put only because it was weighed down with fish, but even then, it rocked under their feet. Standing steady took effort.
The lighter rafts had it worse. No matter how hard they paddled against the wind, they kept drifting farther and farther away with the current.
Nicole frowned, a nagging sense that something about the current wasn’t right. It felt like there was a pull, dragging everything toward the dam.
Zeph felt it, too. He looked over at her instinctively.
Their eyes met, both catching the warning in an instant.
“Run!”
“Run!”
They shouted at the same time, already moving.
Nicole yanked the starter cord. “Hughie, hold on!”
The motor roared to life, and she swung the boat hard in the opposite direction of the dam.
Hughie and Lydia nearly got thrown off the raft. They clung to the rope with everything they had.
Zeph braced himself as Derek and Victor grabbed onto the sacks of fish, holding them tight.
Two motorboats tore across the water like they were racing for their lives.
“Boss, they’re running!”
“Go, go! Don’t let them get away!”
The words had barely left their mouths when a thunderous roar ripped through the air.
It sounded like the sky had split open. A wall of water burst forward, surging out with unstoppable force. 1
Nicole didn’t look back. She just pushed the boat harder, racing the flood.
Hughie couldn’t help himself. He turned and saw that the waterline had collapsed, like something had torn a massive hole through it. Water poured through, dragging everything toward it with terrifying force.
The water level kept dropping as the motorboat surged forward, cutting through the waves.

At last, they reached the far edge safely. They kept the engine running to fight against the pull of the rushing water.
Seizing the moment, Hughie jumped first, scrambling onto shore. He wrapped the rope around a tree again and again, tying it tightly.
Derek and Victor followed, securing the other boat. Together, they hauled both the motorboat and the raft onto land.
Nicole stepped onto solid ground and raised her binoculars.
The dam had given way, and the backed-up floodwater poured out in an endless surge. The sheer force of it felt like an invisible hand, dragging the people on the inflatable rafts toward the breach.
The tattooed men reacted too late. They struggled to start their engine, but it didn’t matter. The current caught their boat, which thrashed like a dying fish before getting pulled under.
It wasn’t just them. Anyone caught in the flood looked like drifting debris before the force of nature, helpless. No matter how hard they fought, they were swallowed up in an instant.
Lydia’s face had gone ghost-pale. She trembled all over, breathing hard as she stared at the steadily dropping waterline.
Out on the surface, the struggling figures were carried farther and farther away, shrinking into tiny dots before disappearing completely.
More than 20 people, gone, just like that.
