Chapter 139
“Whoever did this to you, go find them,” Nicole continued. “Playing the victim won’t work on me.”
With that, she turned and headed upstairs.
“Wait.” Faye’s teeth chattered as she forced the words out, gasping for breath. “I can’t accept this. I regret it so much. If I’d known it would end like this, I never would’ve given up my food. Nicole, please help me. I don’t want to die and then have them throw me out the window.”
It was clear that Faye knew better than anyone that she wasn’t going to make it. After being drained dry like this, dying without closure was unbearable.
Nicole paused, reached into her backpack, pulled out a pack of pills, and gave it to Faye. Inside were a few strong sleeping pills. “Do what you want with it.”
Faye clutched the pills tightly, forcing herself to endure the pain as she hunched over and staggered back toward 1202.
How ironic. This had been her apartment, and now, they were just waiting for her to die.
If Faye could do it over again, she would never have replied in that group chat and let a pack of wolves
into her home.
She wanted to go home. She missed her parents, her grandparents, and the meals they used to make. Sadly, there was no going back. There was no such thing as a redo.
Gripping the pills in her hand, Faye made her choice.
As Nicole reached the 18th floor, the sound of thumping echoed down the hallway. Beatrice was shadowboxing, sweat pouring off her.
Hughie and Jeremy were sparring with sticks. They looked clumsy and a little ridiculous, but their determination to improve was real.
When they saw her, they took the chance to slack off. “Nicole, you went out?”
“Yeah, took Cola for a run.”
“What’s it like out there?”
Even wrapped in fur coats, they still hadn’t adapted to the cold.
Since the deep freeze began, the farthest they had gone was up to the rooftop to collect ice and snow.
“Lively. There are people everywhere, robbing and killing for supplies.”
Hughie and Jeremy froze.
Was it that bad? If they went out, they would almost certainly die.

“You’re not joking, right?”
They would have to face it sooner or later, so Nicole didn’t hide anything. She held up the bloodstained golf club. “What do you think?”
Hughie immediately clung to Beatrice. “I’m scared.”
Jeremy, who had no one to grab onto, turned serious.
This disaster had pushed ordinary people into monsters. Those already living in the shadows were even
worse.
Gabrielle’s concerns weren’t unfounded. It was only a-matter of time before the 18th floor was targeted. They had to get stronger, fast. They couldn’t drag the others down.
“Come on, Hughie. Let’s keep training!”
“Yeah, Jeremy. We can do this!”
Back in her apartment, Nicole changed clothes. She had just taken off her bulletproof vest when the
walkie-talkie crackled.
“Hey, Nicole. Sparring today?”
“Yeah. Be there in a minute.”
