Zeph stepped out and took over Poppy’s role as trainer. That was when he noticed Hughie’s group drenched in sweat as they kept pushing themselves.
Staying alive wasn’t easy, especially for those on the 18th floor, already marked as a target. They were fighting to protect their supplies. Even the dog was getting stronger, let alone the people.
For a moment, something shifted in him. “Do you want to learn crossbow shooting?”
Hughie’s group froze in shock. Was Zeph talking to them?
Crossbows?
Was he offering to teach them? Seriously?
The excitement hit so hard that their hearts felt like they might burst.
Jeremy reacted first. “Yes, please!”
Truth was, they had been jealous for a while. Watching Zeph teach Nicole infiltration skills and run daily professional sparring sessions had them itching.
Zeph came from a special ops background. Whether it was offense or defense, everything he did was professional. Learning even a couple of moves from him was better than fumbling around on their own
for a month.
Just look at Nicole. Back when they were kids, he and Hughie could still put up a fight against her, even if they lost badly. Now, she could probably take both of them out with one punch.
And then there was Cola. A stray dog with plenty of street fighting experience, now trained to the standards of a K9. Calling him intense didn’t even begin to cover it.
Yeah, they were weaker, but they still had their pride. Losing to a dog stung.
It was beyond humiliating.
They had wanted to beg Zeph to take them on as students for a long time, but never found the courage.
The reason was simple. His presence was overwhelming.
Even though they went out together to gather supplies, he kept his distance and was always cold and reserved. He never wasted a word, as if he had the words “Stay Away” written across his forehead.
People were different. Just because Zeph treated Nicole differently didn’t mean he would do the same for them. No matter how much they wanted it, they never dared ask, not even through Nicole.
And now, he was offering.
Jeremy felt like crying. Was this their chance to finally latch onto someone strong?

Hughie felt like crying as well. Getting beaten up by his girlfriend all the time, he wanted to learn a few solid moves so he could finally stand tall in front of her.
Even Beatrice was tempted.
When it came to hand-to-hand fighting, she was confident she could knock Zeph out. But what about everything else?
This wasn’t just a fight anymore. In this disaster, people were turning into monsters. What good were fists alone? Could she match someone with a crossbow, or someone with a gun?
Besides, she had her own ultimate goal: to challenge Zeph someday.
Seeing Hughie’s group answer in unison, Zeph gave a slight nod. “Tomorrow.”
That night, the two guys were so excited that they couldn’t sleep, sneaking under the blankets to drink
beer.
“Jeremy, why do you think Zeph suddenly changed his mind?” Hughie asked.
“Think about it,” Jeremy replied. “The 18th floor is a target now. He might be strong, but he’s not invincible. He’s got a sister to protect, too. If everyone here gets stronger, it makes things easier for him.”
“Yeah… We’ve gotta work harder.”
“Let’s follow Nicole’s lead.”
They kept talking and drinking until they overdid it and passed out right there.
“Ahhh!”
Suddenly, a sharp scream echoed from downstairs.
Jeremy jerked awake, irritated enough to swear. “Damn it, someone died again!”
Hughie groggily sat up. “People die every day. It’s driving me nuts.”
“Where are you going?”
“To find my girlfriend.”
