Chapter 170

Nicole had no patience left. “If living next to us is such a problem, then pack up and move. Go as far as

you want.”

“Why should we move?” Karen shot back, glaring at her. “You got my son taken and hurt my husband!

You think this is over?”

Nicole let out a sigh. “What exactly do you want?”

Nelson grabbed his wife’s arm, forcing himself to stay upright as he looked at Nicole and the others.

“Everyone, I’m sorry. What I did was wrong. I never should’ve turned on you, but I had no choice. Billy’s only eight. If I didn’t do what they said, they would’ve killed him. I brought this on myself, but the kid didn’t do anything. Can you help me get him back?”

Nicole didn’t even know how he could say that out loud.

If he had stood with the Goodmans from the start and defended the building together, if he had told the 18th floor the truth after his son was taken, she might not have risked her life to save the boy, but she

knew how those people operated.

At the very least, she could’ve given him a way forward, a chance for the child to make it back alive.

But when danger came, he hid. Again and again, he let the 18th floor take the risk. And now, he wanted

them to risk their lives to save his son?

Nicole didn’t soften her tone. “You’ve got to be kidding.”

She stopped looking at him and walked straight to 1702, lifting her foot and kicking the door. “If you’ve got any backbone, stay in there forever. Don’t come out.”

Beatrice stepped in and kicked the door even harder. “You hear me? Come out now, or I’ll take this door off its hinges!”

1702 stayed silent. No one opened it.

“Fine. Stay like that,” Nicole said with a cold laugh. “I’m done with you lot. Good luck.”

She turned and headed upstairs without another word.

Beatrice and the others followed. No one was interested in being taken advantage of again. Next time, they would just wait until the 17th floor fell apart.

Karen tried to go after Nicole, but Nelson grabbed her hand tightly.

“Karen… Listen to me. I’m not going to make it.”

She collapsed over him, sobbing. “No, you’re not dying! You can’t die!”

“This is on me. I should’ve protected our son.”

The cold seeped into his bones, creeping through every inch of him. The pain spread, like his insides were slowly locking up.

“Karen, after I’m gone, don’t go after the 18th floor.” Nelson struggled to sit up. “Those people won’t let them go, and the 18th floor won’t back down either. You have to live. Live for me. Wait for Billy.”

“No, Nelson… I can’t do this without you.”

“If the 18th floor wins… Billy might still have a chance to come back. You need to leave. Find somewhere to hide. Don’t get involved with anyone.”

Dragging his bleeding body, Nelson made his way to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and staggered toward

the stairs.

“I’ll go… I’ll go find them. I’ll make them pay. You… You have to live. You have to take care of Billy.”

“Don’t go! Please, don’t go!” Karen’s voice broke as she cried out.

But Nelson didn’t stop. Holding onto the last of his strength, he forced himself down step by step.

He barely made it past the seventh floor. The frozen ground was slick beneath his feet. After a few steps, his body gave out. He hit the ground hard and didn’t get back up.

Nicole had just opened the door when Cola lunged at her, whining loudly, paws pressing against her.

She knew he had been worried. She crouched down and patted his head.
