Chapter 171
Without saying a word, Beatrice and the rest looked away at the same time, pretending they hadn’t seen anything.
Cola threw itself into Nicole’s arms, letting out soft, pitiful whines. He was convinced she saw him as a burden, which was why she never let him help in a fight.
“Cola, I know you’re strong,” Nicole said, gently soothing him. “But they had real weapons. You could’ve gotten hurt.”
She kept petting him. “Next time, okay? Next time you can join in.”
Cola looked up at her.
Really? No tricks?
“Really.” Nicole took his paw and hooked it with her finger.
Hughie and Jeremy watched from the sidelines, jealous as hell.
Honestly, only the dog had the nerve to smack Nicole like that. Anyone else would’ve been in trouble long ago.
At least, they didn’t have that kind of courage. The childhood trauma of getting beaten by her still hadn’t faded.
Man… How was the gap between being human and being a dog this big?
Zeph opened his door. Poppy ran straight into him, lips trembling, her eyes glossy with tears.
He gently patted her head. “Hey, don’t cry. I’m fine.”
Poppy clung to him. “Zeph, I can help, too!”
Why was it that every time something happened, she either got tied up somewhere or locked inside?
Once both of them calmed down, everyone from the 18th floor gathered at Hughie’s place.
Jeremy and Hughie laid everything they found out on the table.
“So, how do we split this?”
The rest was easy enough, but the three guns were the real prize. Holding one of those changed everything.
Nicole felt the same. Finally, everyone on the 18th floor could have one.
Cola was sharp. He had seen Nicole handle them before and knew they were important.
Without hesitation, he grabbed one and placed it in her hand. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he picked up another and held it in his mouth, refusing to let go.

As long as he had one, his human wouldn’t lock him in a room again.
Silence fell over the room.
Everyone stared, stunned. 1
It made sense for Nicole to take one, but what was the dog doing? Was he planning to use it himself? Was there any limit to his nerve?
Nicole couldn’t help but laugh. She took the one from Cola’s mouth and set both back on the table.
No one would ever say no to more weapons, but the 18th floor was a team. It was better for everyone to have something than for one person to take it all, so she didn’t speak first.
Since no one else said anything, Beatrice thought it over. “What if we split them? One for each household?”
Jeremy and Hughie had no objections. They just hoped Nicole and Zeph would agree. It would make defending the building a lot easier.
Zeph glanced at Nicole, paused, then said, “I don’t need one.”
Wait, what? He didn’t want it?
Then again, he was skilled with firearms. Something this rough probably didn’t interest him.
Nicole wanted one, but she already had a weapon. It made more sense to let the others have something for protection.
“I’ll pass, too.”
Beatrice blinked. “Nicole, why would you pass?”
Nicole picked one up and looked it over. “It’s pretty rough. Are you sure it’s safe?”
Zeph took it from her and quickly took it apart. Hughie and Jeremy stared, stunned by how fast his hands
moved.
He checked the parts carefully. “It’s homemade, but the materials are decent. As long as you don’t fire too many rounds in a row, it shouldn’t fail.”
“How many is too many?”
