The executive lounge was a mess, with debris everywhere and dirty footprints tracked across the floor.

Nicole glanced downstairs and saw a group rushing out of the office building.

“Move! Don’t let them get away!”

Uh-oh. The tattooed men were heading straight for Crownview Residences.

Nicole and Zeph exchanged a look and moved down after them. To avoid drawing attention, they didn’t run. Instead, they cut through side paths toward the building.

Zeph stayed calm. “Don’t worry. Hughie’s group can handle themselves. They’ve got guns, and the doors on the 17th floor are electrified. It won’t be easy to break through.”

Nicole nodded. Six layers of doors gave them a solid defense. With all the contingency plans Zeph had mapped out, as long as Jeremy and the others didn’t panic, they wouldn’t fall that quickly.

They took the shortcut and made it back fast. Seeing that there was no sign of chaos outside the building, Zeph pulled Nicole into a hidden spot.

They had just settled in when the group stormed in. It was the same men from the office fight.

“Hurry, they’re in this building! Floors 17 and 18 have reinforced steel doors. They’ve got guns and smoke grenades.”

A disheveled woman rushed up behind them, speaking fast. “I told you everything I know. Once the people on the 18th floor are dead, you have to give my son back!”

One of the tattooed men kicked her hard. “Shut up!”

She hit the ground with a cry, but clung to his leg. “You promised! Give me my son back!”

“Damn it!” He stomped on her head.

In this freezing weather, those two kicks were enough to knock her unconscious.

They had picked today to attack the 18th floor as a gift for Luke. Instead, they had lost men in the office building and let their targets escape.

It was all because this woman hadn’t been clear, making them underestimate the situation.

Frustration boiled over. The man vented it on her, kicking her again and again before finally stopping.” Let’s go. I’m tearing down the 18th floor today!”

Fueled by rage, the group charged upstairs.

The woman was so filthy that she was barely recognizable, but Nicole knew that voice.

It was Karen.

When you bring trouble on yourself, there’s no escaping it.

Nicole remembered that in her previous life, a joint operation had led to the rescue of a group of kidnapped children. They had been taken and used as leverage, then properly resettled afterward.

She understood the desperation of a parent trying to save their child, but trading other people’s lives for

it? That crossed a line.

Nicole felt no sympathy, but she didn’t finish Karen off either. In this cold, passing out outside was as good as a death sentence.

A scream tore through the air. Then came the heavy crash of a door being hit.

The sound echoed from above.

Nicole and Zeph exchanged a look and quietly moved up the stairs, planning to coordinate with Beatrice

and flank them.

Their steps were steady and slow.
