Chapter 182
The thugs had come in full force, confident they would crush the 18th floor.
Instead, they had lost more than half their people, while not a single one upstairs had
Were those people monsters or something?
Luke was still waiting for them to bring back heads as a birthday gift.
“You two, go find some dry wood. I’m busting that door open today no matter what!”
The two underlings nodded quickly and rushed downstairs.

down.
Zeph met Nicole’s eyes and gave a subtle countdown with his gaze. Nicole picked up on it instantly.
As the two men passed the 14th floor and kept heading down, Zeph and Nicole moved at the same time, stepping out from the corridor.
The taller one went to Zeph, and the shorter one to Nicole.
She hadn’t fought seriously before, but she had practiced plenty on Zeph’s neck, and she knew the human body well.
Her first real strike was clean.
In a flash, both necks snapped at an angle.
They dragged the bodies into the hallway, stripped them of weapons and ammo, and took their access
passes, too.
Five more were upstairs.
Zeph loaded a fresh magazine and signaled he would take point, with Nicole covering.
Point meant pushing forward. Cover meant protecting him, only stepping in when needed so she wouldn’t disrupt his rhythm.
Nicole flashed an OK.
They moved up quietly.
Upstairs, the leader was getting impatient. He pulled out a cigarette, and one of his men hurried to light it.
One stood guard at the stairwell. The other two were kicking at a door on the 16th floor, trying to force residents to use their furniture to smash the electrified steel gate.
The residents weren’t stupid. No one opened up.
Maybe because he had a gun, the guard at the stairs stood loose and careless. By the time he sensed something wrong, it was too late.

A bullet struck his forehead before he could even speak.
The others rushed back, but against Zeph, who had real training and field experience, they didn’t stand a chance.
They didn’t even get a chance to pull the trigger before four perfectly placed shots dropped them where they stood.
Nicole, covering from behind, didn’t even get a chance to fire.
Gunshots echoed, and footsteps came from above.
Not wanting friendly fire, Nicole called out, “Beatrice?”
“Nicole?”
Beatrice sounded surprised. “You’re okay?”
“We’re fine. They’re all down.”
Beatrice and Hughie came down with guns drawn. When they saw Nicole and Zeph at the stairwell, they quickly switched off the electrified doors.
“What happened?”
This wasn’t the place to talk.
Nicole stripped the bodies of weapons, ammo, cigarettes, watches, and anything useful.
They headed back up, and she explained, “It’s their boss’s birthday today. Someone wanted our heads as a gift.”
With the danger gone, Jeremy came down from the rooftop, practically strutting. He had taken one out
himself.
“Nicole, did you see that shot? Clean, right?”
Nicole ignored him. There were bigger things to deal with.
“They sent over a dozen people this time, guns blazing. It won’t be this easy next time.”
If they wanted to make an example, the 18th floor was the obvious target.
Nicole turned to Zeph. “With their boss throwing a party today, and people out collecting protection rations, their defenses should be at their weakest.”
Zeph’s expression turned serious. “This is the best window we’ll get.”
