When it was about time, Nicole carried a tray of frozen fish slices over and brought Cola along to

Hughie’s apartment for the group meal.

The dog’s appetite kept growing. Anyone who didn’t know better would think he had been starving his whole life. He even dragged over a washbasin to use as his food bowl.

Everyone on the 18th floor knew how much he could eat, so they made extra rice on purpose.

Nicole liked her camp stew with a bit of heat, but to accommodate Poppy and Cola, she also made a lighter version.

The fish went in last so that the smell wouldn’t spread too early.

Jeremy took out a bottle of liquor and warmed it in hot water so it wouldn’t freeze their lips. “Alright, here’s to wiping out those thugs. May we always have meat to eat and something to drink!”

Nicole laughed. “You realize to other people, we’re probably the thugs.”

“Fine. Then, except for us, every other troublemaker can go.”

They raised their cups and drank.

The liquor was smooth and rich on the tongue. It hit sharp at first, then warmed all the way down.

Hughie was already hooked just from the smell of the stew, though he still looked concerned. “With a smell this strong, won’t it drift outside?”

Beatrice cracked her knuckles. “So what if it does? Anyone who wants trouble can come try.”

Nicole nodded. “Our reputation’s already bad. If we’re too scared to eat meat, then what’s the point?”

Poppy caught on right away. “Zeph, Nicole, I want meat! I want meat every day.”

“Exactly. Starting now, we don’t hold back. We eat meat and drink every day.”

As they ate and talked, Nicole even pulled out a tablet to play something. With the bike generating power, they could afford it.

Jeremy ate happily, still talking between bites. “Too bad we don’t have vegetables. I miss the fresh greens Nicole used to grow. And those sprouts.”

As he said it, Nicole glanced at Zeph without thinking.

He knew about her hidden garden.

Zeph didn’t react. “This is already a good meal. Plenty of people don’t even get this.”

His expression stayed calm, without any sign of interest.

So he really wasn’t thinking about her vegetables.

Nicole relaxed a little. Last night had just been a dream. It probably wouldn’t happen.

After one round, they threw the fish in.

Nicole liked fish heads, but before she could reach for it, Hughie moved fast and scooped half into Beatrice’s bowl. “Here, babe.”

She was just a bit too slow. Her ladle bumped into another as they both went for the last fish head.

It was Zeph, and she had gotten there first.

Nicole felt a little awkward. When she got back, she was going to cook a bunch of fish heads and eat as many as she wanted.

They were standing close, and Zeph casually placed the fish head into her bowl. “Ladies first.”

Nicole froze for a moment.

The others were even more surprised. Weren’t they just neighbors and teammates? Nicole had said so

herself.

But the three of them reacted quickly, hiding their expressions right away. No one said anything.

Nicole cared about her image, and Zeph wasn’t someone they could joke about. It was safer to stay quiet.
