Chapter 200
The moment his human was shouted at, Cola turned and snapped at the girl, baring his teeth.
“Woof!”
“Buster, why are you acting like this? It’s me!” The girl froze, then her voice wavered. “I’ve been looking for you every day since you disappeared. I’m sorry… I should’ve watched you better.”
Cola’s eyes went cold. There was nothing soft in his expression, only clear rejection as his teeth showed.
Jeremy stepped in, irritation rising. He lifted a stick to push them back. “You see that? That’s not your dog. Leave now before we stop being polite.”
The group on the other side didn’t budge, however. They had the numbers, and they were set on taking the dog no matter what.
Voices rose, shoulders collided, and people started pushing. If the military and police hadn’t still been nearby, it would’ve turned into a real fight.
Right as things were about to spiral, a patrol car pulled up nearby. “What’s going on here?”
The group stiffened and instinctively stepped back, creating space.
Two officers got out. One of them was the same middle-aged man from earlier, Jasper. He walked over, composed and firm. “All of you look capable enough. Instead of figuring out how to survive, you’re out here causing trouble?”
The girl’s eyes lit up when she saw him, as if she had found someone to back her up. “Officer, thank God you’re here! They took my dog and won’t admit it!”
“Dog?” Jasper’s gaze moved across the group and settled on Cola beside Nicole.
A flicker of surprise crossed his face.
A Belgian Malinois, and not an ordinary one. The coat was dense and well-kept, the build solid, the proportions excellent.
Jasper had worked with plenty of police dogs before, especially Malinois. They were intelligent, obedient, and dependable, some of the best working dogs out there. 1
Even then, he had never seen one this big or imposing.
Was a Malinois supposed to look like this?
From the muscle alone, the dog had to weigh at least 70 pounds. And from his posture and the focus in his eyes, it was obvious he had training. Calling him a working dog wouldn’t be an exaggeration.
Jasper’s eyes moved over Nicole and the others, then paused briefly on Zeph. The way the young man carried himself suggested discipline. Military, or something close to it.

Jasper shifted his attention back to the girl. “Start from the beginning.”
She quickly told her story again, insisting the dog was hers. “I bought him online. Paid 200 bucks for him. My phone got lost, or I’d have pictures, too.”
Two men behind her spoke up, saying they could confirm it.
The dog had been gone for almost a year, and neither side was backing down.
Jasper turned to Nicole. “Do you have anything to prove your claim?”
Nicole didn’t answer right away and looked at the girl instead. “Are you sure he went missing? Or did you sell him to an illegal slaughterhouse?”
“I paid 200 dollars for him! Why would I sell him?”
The moment Nicole said “illegal slaughterhouse,” Cola reacted. His fur stood on end, tension running through him. If she hadn’t held him back, he would’ve gone straight for the girl.
The girl flinched and took a few steps back.
Jasper watched everything, saying nothing.
Nicole spoke calmly. “If he’s really yours, tell me how many scars he has.”
The girl didn’t hesitate. “I treated him like family. He didn’t have any scars when he went missing.”
