Nicole, who had poured her whole heart into that meal, only to suffer critical emotional damage in return, fell silent.

Poppy looked panicked. “Nicole, m-my stomach hurts. I-I can’t eat anymore!”

Even the normally composed Zeph failed to keep a straight face. “I’ll go find Poppy some medicine.”

Just like that, the siblings escaped.

Nicole could tolerate outsiders rejecting her food, but when her gaze slowly landed on Cola, and the dog immediately started backing away while shaking his head furiously, Nicole got offended.

“You’re eating it whether you want to or not. Since when did you start thinking you’re human?”

People always said dogs would eat anything, yet look at that expression on his face. Not only did he have to eat his portion, but he was also finishing Zeph and Poppy’s bowls, too.

Since that bottomless pit was always dragging the washbasin around anyway, he could have the whole

pot.

“Eat. Don’t waste food.”

Fortunately, only Nicole’s bowl had the pickled herring mixed in. Cola tolerated it for her sake, but he clearly couldn’t stand the smell, so he dragged the basin out to the balcony and noisily devoured the

noodles out there.

All eight rabbits immediately rushed over to join him and started fighting the dog for instant noodles.

Normally, rabbits would get sick easily if they drank too much water, but maybe because they had mutated, these ones not only drank water but soup, too. Sometimes, they even stole food directly from the dog.

Now they were slurping noodles right alongside him.

Especially Snowy. She was pregnant again-yes, again-and her appetite had become terrifying.

Nicole was too emotionally wounded to care anymore, so she calmly finished the entire plate of pickled herring alongside her noodles.

Not only that, she even planned to snack on blue cheese that night, too.

If she was going to stink people out, she might as well do it proudly.

Of course, after eating, she still opened the windows to air out the room, brushed her teeth, rinsed her mouth, and even changed clothes afterward.

She assumed Zeph had probably been traumatized away by the smell. Instead, the walkie-talkie crackled that afternoon.

“Training today?”

Of course, they were training.

If he wasn’t afraid of getting fumigated by pickled herrings, what exactly did she have to feel

embarrassed about?

Thanks to careful tending, the cold-resistant potatoes finally reached harvest season.

The plants themselves weren’t especially large or leafy, but the yields were incredible. Every planting trough overflowed with egg-sized potatoes.

Nicole pulled up a stalk and counted over 20 potatoes attached to it. After weighing them on the hanging scale, the total came out to just over 3 pounds. The other plants performed well, too, most yielding anywhere from two to over four pounds each.

The group stayed busy harvesting nonstop, eventually collecting a total of 136 pounds of potatoes. The result honestly shocked everyone.

That afternoon, nobody bothered cooking actual dishes.

They simply steamed an entire pot of potatoes instead.

The skins were thick, the flesh dense and fibrous, and it took nearly 40 minutes before the potatoes finally split open from the steam.

Once they were done, everyone ate them while they were still hot.

As for the taste… They were starchy enough, but there was also an unpleasant bitterness, and the texture was rough and stringy enough to make swallowing difficult.

Honestly, they tasted pretty terrible.

But Nicole had lived through the apocalypse once already. She had even eaten clay during starvation

before.

For survivors pushed to the edge of hunger, potatoes were absolutely the kind of food that brought overwhelming happiness.

She wasted nothing and ate three in a row.

Cola had always been a big eater. Even though Nicole spoiled him constantly now, the memory of starving stray-dog life seemed carved into his bones. He didn’t complain about the potatoes at all, chewing through the skin and fibers before swallowing everything down.

Poppy, however, finally cracked. “Zeph, this tastes awful.”

Zeph spoiled his sister endlessly most of the time, but when it came to food, he became extremely strict.

“There are people outside who can’t even eat potato peels,” he said calmly. “Do you want to go hungry, too?”
