Chapter 262
Nicole never held back when it came to things she could share.
As for the things she couldn’t, all she could do was apologize.
“I stocked up on some used fans. I can give you one. I also picked up a portable fridge, but I found out later that it’s broken. If you can fix it, it’s yours. If not, I’ll give you the one I’m using.”
Hughie sounded confident about it. “I’ll take a look.”
As for power generation, Nicole still suggested rationing it by headcount. Poppy didn’t count for now
since she was still little.
But she strongly advised against pedaling the bikes for long periods, especially in extreme heat.
“Nicole, can we grow vegetables?” Beatrice had been craving fresh greens for over a year now.
The second she brought it up, Jeremy and Hughie instantly looked tempted, too.
Nicole didn’t mind. “With temperatures this high, I don’t know if hydroponics will work, but I’ll test it out.”
After Hughie’s group finished choosing supplies, Nicole deducted the costs against the valuables they
had left with her earlier.
Even close friends needed a clear accounting. Better that than future resentment.
She quietly gave them cheaper rates than the normal market prices.
Beatrice and the others had zero complaints.
Once again, they felt lucky they had chosen to follow Nicole’s lead. She had saved them an unbelievable amount of trouble.
Just as they were about to leave, Zeph stopped them and handed over a walkie-talkie. “Easier to stay in
contact.”
Hughie instantly understood and grinned. “Thanks, Zeph. We’ll stop bothering you two now.”
After nightfall, the temperature dropped fairly quickly.
With the fans running, everyone slept surprisingly well.
A little after 7 a.m. the next day, harsh sunlight slipped through the cracks in the curtains.
After a full day and night, the floodwater had already warmed to room temperature, and the heat kept building.
Zeph came over and helped secure stainless steel mesh around the edges of Nicole’s balcony to stop insects from climbing in along the walls.
Now that the weather had warmed up, Poppy finally resumed her lessons after abandoning them during

the deep freeze.
Worried she had forgotten everything, Nicole prepared a test for her.
To Nicole’s surprise, Poppy not only scored perfectly but also finished incredibly fast.
“Nicole, I already learned all this.” As she spoke, she flipped further ahead through the textbook. “Zeph taught me.”
Oh? So he actually knew how to teach.
Which meant swapping lessons with her back then was either because he was lazy…or because he had already had his eye on her from the start.
Poppy leaned close and whispered into Nicole’s ear, “Nicole, I like it better when you teach me. You’re
more fun to listen to.”
Nicole soon realized every chapter Zeph skipped involved lessons about self-sacrifice, social responsibility, or putting others before yourself.
Before the apocalypse, there would’ve been nothing wrong with teaching those values.
But now, laws and order were gone. If they kept filling Poppy’s head with those ideals, it might completely shatter the survival mindset she had already built.
At that point, who could even say which worldview was correct anymore?
Nicole had to admit it. Zeph had really thought this through carefully.
So, she reorganized the lesson plans herself and continued teaching Poppy.
As temperatures climbed higher and higher, trash kept getting dumped endlessly into the floodwater. The lower-floor residents quickly suffered the consequences first.
The smell became unbearable.
With no other choice, many people were forced to move higher up the building.
Of course, plenty of inconsiderate people still dumped sewage and wastewater down the drains.
After doing this a few times, the outcome was inevitable.
