Chapter 263
One side refused to admit anything. The other refused to let it go.
Tempers exploded, and kitchen knives started swinging wildly.
The residents on the lower floors completely snapped.
One man stormed upstairs, kicking doors and screaming, “Anybody dumps sewage downstairs again, I’ll chop you up myself!”
He charged all the way to the 16th floor before finally noticing the fortress-like doors leading up to the 17th. Only then did the rage drain out of him.
The man collapsed onto the stairs and broke down crying like a helpless child.
Nobody paid him any attention.
The heat rose too quickly. Before noon even arrived, the temperature had already reached 109 degrees, while the indoor temperature on the top floor climbed to 102. Even the fans only blew hot air.
Cola completely gave up and sprawled on the floor with his tongue hanging out.
To survive the deep freeze, he had grown an extremely thick coat of fur.
Now, the world had switched straight into extreme heat without warning. With dogs only able to cool themselves by panting, Cola looked miserable. 1
Nicole finally steeled herself and dragged him into the bathroom to shave him completely.
Not only did Cola look traumatized by his own reflection, but even the rabbits got scared and hid the second they saw him.
Nicole dug out a set of temperature-regulating clothing and decisively put it on him.
At first, Cola resisted stubbornly, but the moment the cool sensation spread across his body, he froze in surprise before instantly springing back to life.
The sunlight beating against the windows turned the glass scorching hot, flooding the room with
blinding glare.
Heat waves rolled through the air hard enough to make everything outside look distorted.
Meanwhile, Hughie suddenly started yelling from outside. He had gone up to the rooftop to collect water, and his plastic slippers had literally started melting.
The soles stuck to the concrete like glue. If he hadn’t run fast enough, the slippers probably would’ve melted completely into goo.
“What the hell is wrong with this sunlight?”

He had only been outside a short while in a T-shirt, yet his face and arms already burned painfully. Looking down, he discovered his skin had turned bright red.
Jeremy, lacking all human sympathy, didn’t comfort him at all. Instead, he pulled out a thermometer to check the temperature.
Good lord. The surface temperature had reached 176 degrees!
This was the nightmare of living on the top floor.
Sweat poured off them nonstop, even when they sat completely still inside the apartment.
When Nicole opened the door, she found two idiots climbing upstairs, holding umbrellas while arguing loudly.
“Trust me, it’ll totally work. I’m telling you, we can absolutely make popcorn with this heat.”
Those two…
Did Beatrice not even try stopping them?
But when Nicole arrived at Hughie’s apartment, she realized Beatrice simply had bigger problems.
She had gotten her period. 1
Long ago, she had already run out of sanitary pads. The last few months, she had been surviving on tissue paper and improvised substitutes.
The deep freeze had been manageable. Extreme heat was another story entirely.
Existing already felt miserable in this weather, let alone dealing with cramps and bleeding on top of it.
“Why didn’t you say something?”
Nicole hurried back to her own apartment and pulled ten packs of pads out from the storage space, including both daytime and overnight ones. She also grabbed several pairs of underwear. 1
She had already stockpiled plenty before the apocalypse and collected even more during the mall raids
later on.
One person couldn’t possibly use all of it anyway.
When she handed everything over, she deliberately hid her concern behind teasing.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Good thing I traded for a bunch of these during the deep freeze.”
It wasn’t that Beatrice didn’t want to say anything. The supplies were simply too valuable. Even while working patrol, she couldn’t find anyone willing to trade them.
She never expected Nicole to have connections like this.
