It was actual popcorn, warm and fragrant. Add a little caramel coating, and it would taste just like movie theater popcorn.

Unlike those two idiots, though, Nicole and Beatrice couldn’t laugh about it.

Especially after hearing the latest radio broadcast.

The city warned residents not to go outside over the next few days. People living on lower floors were reminded to keep their doors and windows shut whenever sanitation crews came through, disinfecting the area.

The broadcast also promoted hygiene awareness while reminding people how to prevent pests, treat

heatstroke, and handle other health risks.

Only a few days had passed, and temperatures had already climbed past 104 degrees. How were people supposed to survive this?

If it were just heat, maybe it would’ve been manageable. The real problem was the humidity.

The entire city sat submerged in floodwater while the brutal sunlight cooked the surface like boiling

soup.

The apartment buildings felt like giant steamers. And the survivors trapped inside were the food slowly being cooked alive.

The hotter it got, the more irritable people became. Everyone seemed to have a shorter fuse lately, ready to snap at the slightest thing.

Compared to the deep freeze, the extreme heat felt even more hopeless.

During the deep freeze, at least people could keep adding layers. But when it got too hot, there was only so much clothing you could take off.

Rumor had it that an elderly resident in the complex who survived the deep freeze had died from heatstroke yesterday.

Nicole carried over some popcorn for Poppy and Cola as a snack.

Poppy was hot, too, but with the ice-filled air cooler running beside her and an iced soda in hand, she looked perfectly content. She ate while sharing bites with Cola.

Around 2 p.m., even Nicole started sweating.

Living on the top floor really was a special kind of suffering. The indoor temperature had already reached 113 degrees.

The so-called eternal 77-degree comfort from the temperature-regulating clothing had officially failed.

Nicole suspected 113 degrees was probably its upper limit. Above that point, the cooling effect

weakened.

Still, the clothing definitely worked.

With it on, the heat she actually felt was probably closer to 86 degrees, around 25 degrees lower than the real temperature.

In other words, if the temperature kept rising, even the temperature-regulating clothing would eventually

become useless.

The deep freeze had worked the same way. Toward the end, she had nearly frozen solid despite wearing

it

The top floor stayed at least five or six degrees hotter than the lower levels. If even Nicole struggled to endure it, the rest of the 18th floor would have it far worse.

People underestimated what a five-degree difference could do. Near the human body’s limit, even a single degree could kill.

Nicole thought for a while before slipping into the storage space.

She carried out two bolts of fabric: temperature-regulating fabric and ordinary cloth.

The normal fabric could be turned into curtains to block sunlight and heat from the balcony. Whatever remained could be used for sewing practice.

The temperature-regulating fabric was limited and impossible to replace.

Nicole took out a portable multifunction mini sewing machine and started fumbling through the

instruction manual.

She was ridiculously stingy with the fabric. The tiny shirts and pants she practiced on were barely palm-

sized.

After ruining seven or eight attempts, she finally figured it out and gradually became more skilled.

Nicole decided to make each person one set of temperature-regulating clothes.

One set only. No extras.

She made them loose-fitting with long sleeves and full-length pants, similar to sun-protection clothing, complete with attached hoods.

Zeph came over to help install the curtains and saw her working nonstop. “Since when do you know how

to make clothes?”
