Chapter 265

Nicole finally understood. It wasn’t that the authorities refused to act. The disasters were simply impossible to predict.
Every department scrambled around like headless chickens, exhausting themselves just trying to keep up while constantly chasing one catastrophe after another.
Still, the measures they were taking now would save countless lives.
That evening, Lydia came up to the rooftop to collect water and handed Nicole half a bundle of wilted, yellowing sweet potato vines.
“These are heat-resistant sweet potatoes developed by the Grayport Agricultural Research Institute. There aren’t enough actual sweet potatoes to distribute yet, so they’re using seedlings for propagation
first.
“A lot of cities are waiting for supplies. Westbridge only received a small batch, and most of it went to government-affiliated organizations for trial planting. It’ll probably be a while before regular people can get them.”
Since Lydia had already quit her job, she no longer received benefits. These seedlings originally belonged to Derek and Victor, but Gabrielle decided to give half to the 18th floor.
Worried the younger generation might waste water carelessly, she even specifically reminded them,” Don’t dump out water after washing vegetables or your face. Even when rinsing your mouth, spit near the seedlings. Don’t waste clean water.”
Nicole thanked her. “How come I haven’t seen Gabrielle these past couple of days?”
Lydia looked worried. “The heat’s been too much for her. She hasn’t been feeling well and barely dares to leave the apartment.”
Ever since the disasters began, the Goodmans had proven themselves trustworthy again and again.
Nicole went downstairs to the 17th floor for a quick visit.
Gabrielle wasn’t seriously ill, but she definitely showed early signs of heat exhaustion.
Nicole gave her two bottles of heat-relief medicine along with some herbal tea meant to help cool the body down.
Medicine was precious now. Gabrielle refused to accept the supplies for free and immediately told Lydia
to prepare something in exchange.
Nicole waved it off. “Call it payment for the sweet potato vines.”
She quickly left before they could argue further.
After two full days of work, she finally finished making all five sets of clothing. She chose a silver-gray

fabric color.
Zeph’s outfit used the most fabric by far because of his height and build.
Beatrice came second. She was tall, with a strong athletic frame.
While Poppy worked on homework nearby, Nicole waved her over to try the clothes on.
Kids grew too quickly. There was no way Nicole could afford to make new sets every year, so she intentionally made the outfit oversized.
As a result, the pants’ legs dragged across the floor.
Well… They could just pull the waistband higher and roll the cuffs up for now.
At first, Poppy didn’t notice much difference after putting it on. A few moments later, though, her eyes suddenly widened.
“Nicole, it’s so cool!”
Compared to the suffocating humid heat outside, the difference felt incredible.
Under Zeph’s guidance, Poppy had learned not to constantly bombard people with questions. She wasn’t the type to ask endless whys anymore.
Still, she couldn’t resist showing off a little.
“Cola, look! Nicole made me new clothes.”
Cola grinned proudly.
His human had already made him two sets earlier.
Kids were easy to fool. Adults needed actual explanations.
Zeph’s set fit perfectly. Wearing it made him look more relaxed somehow, almost lazy in an effortless
way.
Apparently in a good mood, he took advantage of Cola not paying attention and pulled Nicole into a quick
hug
“Nicole, thank you.”
Other than his parents, nobody in either his previous life or this one had ever cared for him this much.
Even though Zeph never asked questions, Nicole still felt she should explain things now that they were
together
“I found the fabric in that office building before. I thought it was just some exaggerated marketing gimmick Didn’t expect it to actually regulate temperature.”
With the temperature-regulating clothes and electric fans, surviving the heat was still possible for now.
