Chapter 334

After taking down the solar panels and storing them, Zeph and Nicole were about to head downstairs when the mushroom cloud suddenly spread outward as if it had burst.
Lightning flashed wildly inside the clouds.
A thunderstorm.
Those rolling, swelling clouds were storm clouds.
Dense streaks of lightning tore through them like a swarm, striking straight into the sea and weaving together into a blinding net.
The flashes came again and again, high-voltage and relentless.
This was no distant storm. It was right in front of them.
Nicole’s scalp tingled. Her heart clenched.
People liked to call the ocean a mother, but now it had turned without warning. With a display like this, it wouldn’t stop at wind and rain.
Running wasn’t an option. No car, no matter how fast, could outrun the sea.
What now?
Nicole’s thoughts raced.
Then, something clicked. She reached into her storage space and pulled it out.
An orange survival pod, more than nine feet across, appeared on the rooftop, 1
Hopefully they wouldn’t need it. But it was better to have it ready.
Surprise flickered across Zeph’s face, but he moved on quickly and headed down to the second floor. “Poppy, come help me take out the air conditioners.”
With Poppy gone, Nicole kept working, pulling everything into storage. Air conditioners, the washing machine, the refrigerator, the couches.
Luckily, they had only kept the essentials out. Otherwise, this would have taken far longer.
At a moment like this, Zeph moved with the speed of someone trained for it. He was so fast that even five Nicoles working together wouldn’t have kept up.
She had barely finished her side when he had already removed all three units, including the outdoor compressors.
By then, the sunlight had vanished completely, and darkness pressed in from all directions.
Once everything was packed, the four of them rushed back up to the roof.
Lightning streaked across the sky. The clouds sank lower and lower, as if something unseen were forcing them down. The space between sky and ground felt like it was tightening.
It wasn’t just a feeling. The sky really was closing in.
Nicole raised her binoculars and focused. It took a moment before she understood what she was seeing.

Waves towering like walls, rolling in from the far edge of the sea.
It was a tsunami.
The survivors on the beach finally realized something was wrong. At first they froze, then panic broke loose. People screamed and ran inland.
The crowd was packed together. Screams overlapped. Some people ran without looking back. Others knocked down the elderly and children in their rush. Some refused to abandon their tents and tried to pack them before fleeing.
Bodies slammed into each other. People stumbled and fell. Some were trampled. Some were separated from their families. Everyone scattered in panic.
Some ran uphill. Some ran toward the fishing village. Fear spread through the crowd.
But no one could outrun the wave.
Against that towering wall of water, people looked like ants. No matter how they struggled, it changed nothing.
The mass of people was swallowed in seconds. Most didn’t even have time to react before the water took them.
The wave surged forward, unstoppable, crushing everything in its path.
The pier went the same way. Fishing boats of every size had been docked there. In calmer times, they had been sturdy vessels, strong enough to face the sea and return with full catches.i
But in front of this, they were nothing.
