Mandy stiffened, convinced there wasn’t a man in the base she couldn’t handle. The moment she met Nicole’s cold gaze, though, something in her gave way.

There was killing intent in those eyes. The kind you only saw in people who had taken lives.

Her cheek was already swelling, her mouth thick with the metallic taste of blood.

No one had expected Nicole to step in. With her words cutting straight through them, the leaders were left looking bad.

Anthony moved quickly to smooth things over, his expression turning sharp. “Use your eyes next time. Get out of here.”

Mandy clutched her face and stumbled away.

Anthony turned back right away. “Nicole, I’m really sorry. Don’t take it the wrong way. She didn’t know Zeph was taken.”

“If I were taking it the wrong way, would she still be walking?”

Nicole glanced at the leaders, her smile thin.

“I’ve got a bad temper, and I don’t share. If anyone tries to shove that kind of trash at my man again, I won’t be polite. When I lose my temper, I’m not any easier to deal with than he is. I’d suggest you don’t test that.”

“Ha… Yeah…”

They were furious, but all they could do was force a laugh.

In their eyes, Nicole had gotten far too full of herself.

Everyone knew Felix hated people who attracted too much attention. It was only a matter of time before Nicole and Zeph learned that the hard way.

Nicole ignored the calculation in their eyes. Time would tell who walked out alive.

The two little ones had wandered off to play, but ended up drawn in by the smell of food.

A girl and a dog made their way to the fire, staring at the whole lamb roasting over the flames, both of them swallowing hard.

Knowing who Poppy was with, the greasy cook sliced off a piece and handed it over. “Here you go, kid.”

Poppy took it. “Thank you, sir.”

With the meat in hand, she drifted over to the large iron pot of beef stew.

The older woman tending the pot had been dragged here to work. When she saw the bright, sweet girl, she was suddenly reminded of her granddaughter who had frozen to death in the cold, and her eyes reddened.

Poppy edged closer, nibbling on the meat. “Ma’am, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” The woman stirred the pot and wiped her eyes with her sleeve. “Just the steam.”

“Do you want some?” Poppy held out the meat. “You can have mine.”

Her granddaughter had been just as sweet, always offering her food, always saying, “Grandma, you eat.”

Everyone in her family was gone now, and she was the only one left.

Looking at Poppy’s soft, round face, the woman couldn’t hold back her tears. She turned away and wiped them.

“No, you eat it.”

Cola’s eyes lit up as he grabbed Poppy’s pant leg and tugged her away.

Poppy waved at her. “Bye.”

The woman took a steadying breath and went back to the pot.

Nearby, people were mixing drinks. Poppy wandered over, curious.

“What are you doing?”

A group of tattooed men was pouring red wine, liquor, beer, and soda into a large wooden barrel.

They usually preferred hard liquor, but Felix had taste. He liked cocktails and had said drinks were free tonight.

They had brought back plenty from Drakehold Base, or they wouldn’t be drinking this freely.

None of them actually knew how to mix drinks. They just dumped everything together. It was how they always did it, and Felix had never complained, always acting like it was the best thing he had ever tasted.

When they saw the well-dressed little girl, the men exchanged looks, a bad idea taking shape.

“Hey, sweetheart,” one of them called, waving her over. “Come here.”

A flicker of fear crossed her face, but she still walked over. “Yeah?”
