Chapter 396
Zeph hadn’t missed it. “Those are strategic supplies. Civilians can’t buy them. They’re controlled by specialized units.”
If they couldn’t get them, then they would have to wait and see if an opportunity came up later.
Nicole brought up another issue: water and power. It might sound like overthinking, but the concern stuck with her. After everything she had seen, nothing felt impossible anymore.
Zeph thought it through. “It’s not unreasonable. Space isn’t an issue, so we can fill up the water tanks. If supply ever gets cut off, we’ll be ready.”
That was exactly what she had in mind, which was why she asked Weasel to source more tanks. If water ever ran out, just thinking about the baths she had taken and the water she had traded away would be enough to haunt her.
Power wasn’t as urgent. They had solar generators and several diesel units, and aside from charging battery packs, they hadn’t used much.
“I promised Weasel half a truck of water,” she added. “But what we’re getting in return makes it worth it.”
With the entire building to themselves, reinforced security, and Cola on watch, she felt at ease.
With time on her hands, Nicole filled every water tank they had, including large plastic barrels. She reorganized their supplies, prioritizing perishables in the villa area, then anything with an expiration date.
The cruise ship had plenty of storage space, so anything not needed right away was moved there, freeing up several thousand square feet of black soil for planting.
At lunch, the city released its daily update.
To celebrate the annual Harvest Festival, residents could collect welfare supplies at their local community center. Each person would receive half a pound of salt, two pounds of grain, and ten liters of fresh water.
Part of the supply came from the 60 thousand pounds of food seized from Ironvale Base.
Nicole paused. She hadn’t expected Jasper to return it all to the public.
The Harvest Festival was approaching. It had been two full years since everything began.
The good news didn’t last long.
The state weather agency warned that earthquakes were likely in the coming months. Residents were advised to prepare, pack essential supplies, and keep emergency kits ready. If an earthquake struck, they were to stay calm and move to open areas away from buildings.
Even after living through it once, Nicole still felt uneasy.
The timing could shift. No one knew exactly when it would happen. All they could do was prepare.
She took out four emergency kits and added water, compressed rations, and medicine.
One for each of them, including Cola.
They kept them by the bed so they could grab them and go.
That evening, Nicole carried a bucket to collect water and ran into Alex on the way.

He reminded her, “You should stop by the community center and update your residency, or you won’t be able to get the festival supplies.”
Nicole didn’t plan to claim them, but she nodded. “Got it. Thanks, Captain Landon.”
“And you heard about the earthquake warning?”
