Chapter 397
Alex looked genuinely pleased.
“Nicole, we reached an agreement with the townspeople. We’re sending people to teach them how to dig wells,”
If the two of them hadn’t stepped in that day and shut down the aggression, there would have been no way to sit down and talk.
After going back and forth, the townspeople finally believed Oakhaven Gardens was sincere about helping them.
They had the upper hand, yet still chose to negotiate instead of escalating. Nicole couldn’t help but respect that.
Alex might come across as mild, but he knew how to think things through.
“That’s good,” Nicole said, then added, “Just be careful.”
“We wouldn’t have gotten here this fast without your help.”
Nicole smiled. “You said it yourself, Captain Landon. Once we’re here, we’re on the same side. No need to be so formal.”
Back home, she told Zeph about it. He wasn’t surprised.
“Out here, strength decides everything. Someone like Alex, who chooses a different approach, is rare. It makes sense the townspeople didn’t trust him at first. We took our time deciding to move in, too.”
If the water issue was solved, the immediate risk would ease.
But what about after the earthquake? With buildings collapsing everywhere, survival would only get harder. Nicole couldn’t shake the concern.
“Do you know what Oakhaven Gardens looks like after the quake?”
“Other than the fact it’s still standing, no,” Zeph said. “We’ll deal with it when it comes. If it’s too dangerous, we leave.”
Nicole nodded. There was no such thing as a truly safe place anymore.
When it was time to collect the goods, she set it for night. After leaving Oakhaven Gardens, she picked a convertible truck.
At the meeting point, Weasel was already there. To her surprise, Sven had come, too.
“Nicole.” Sven had a cigarette between his fingers and gave her a nod. “You and Zeph made it through alright?”
“Barely,” she said. “We left early that day in case Seaborn Base tried anything. Once we hit the foothills, something felt off, so we turned back right away. That’s the only reason we made it.”
Sven let out a sigh. “Lucky.”
Everything she had asked for was there. Sven had come partly to see her, but also out of curiosity. “Why are you having us source iodine tablets? Your usual supplier could get you things like tetanus shots.”
Nicole made a face. “That line got shut down. Someone reported them. They’re working in a labor camp up in Mount Rushburn now.”
Sven froze. He had been hoping to tap into that connection.

Still not satisfied, he pressed, “What about water? Any chance you can work something out?”
