Chapter 43
Rain hammered against the windows while Nicole’s group sat there eating hot, cheesy mac-and-cheese. The smell filled the whole office, rich and comforting. For a moment, it almost felt like life was normal again.
“We’ve got enough medicine,” Jeremy said, wiping his mouth. “But we’re short on food. There are a few livestream sales comparries in this building. Let’s check them out.”
No one argued. They got up and went right back to work, prying doors open.
The first company turned out to be cosmetics and skincare. Jeremy and Hughie barely glanced at it, but Nicole’s eyes lit up.
There were boxes of brand-name skincare, makeup, lipstick, face masks, and expensive creams.
She didn’t hold back. She grabbed the pricey stuff and stuffed it into her bag.
Hughie figured he might as well bring something back for Beatrice, so he picked out a few things, too.
The guys weren’t interested in anything else there. They headed upstairs to keep looking.
“Hurry up,” Hughie called. “We’ll wait for you up top.”
As soon as they left, Nicole swept the rest into her storage space.
The second company was worse. It was full of women’s clothing, with racks of dresses, shoes, and handbags.
Hughie grabbed a couple of outfits for Beatrice. Nicole picked out a few things for herself, too.
The third company finally had food, but it was mostly snacks, such as beef jerky, trail mix, pastries, and bottled drinks. It even had ice cream, though it had all melted into a mess in the freezer.
It took up a lot of space. They packed everything into several large black trash bags.
Nicole didn’t forget to grab extra trash bags from the janitor’s closet. Those would come in handy later.
Time slipped by fast. Moving like this was too slow.
“We should split up,” Nicole said. “Each takes a few floors. We’ll cover more ground that way.”
There were 15 floors above the waterline. Nicole took three floors, and the three guys split the rest.
Nicole ended up with floors 12 through 15. She started from the top and worked her way down.
Back on the 15th floor, she returned to the pharmaceutical company and quietly cleared out all the vaccines from the fridge.
Her storage space could preserve them indefinitely. No problem there.
She didn’t have much time, so she focused on the bigger companies first. One office caught her eye right away, a well-known appliance brand’s regional office.
The showroom was huge, filled with high-end refrigerators, washers and dryers, air conditioners, and smart kitchen appliances, everything sleek and modern.
The government would probably set up survivor bases eventually. Some of them might even have decent living conditions. And with the solar generator in her storage space, she might actually be able to use some of this.
Even if she didn’t, she could always toss it later.

She picked out what she liked.
A large double-door refrigerator, air conditioners, washers, portable cooling fans, automatic cooking machines, ice makers, crock pots, bread makers, blenders, cordless vacuums, and dryers.
Nicole liked cooking, but she hated doing dishes, so she grabbed a couple of dishwashers without hesitation.
They took up a lot of space, but she had already cleared out her storage area earlier.
Big companies had good perks. The break room was stocked.
Nicole grabbed the milk, drinks, and expensive snacks meant for entertaining clients. The fresh fruit had all gone bad, leaving behind a pile of shriveled lemons.
Next door was a small in-house bakery for employees. It had plenty of baking supplies, including flour, cake mix, eggs, and butter.
