The moment Poppy climbed into the tub, she grabbed the rim in alarm. “Zeph, I’m floating!”

“Don’t worry. The water just makes you feel lighter.”

Once she got used to the sensation, Poppy relaxed and began enjoying herself.

So this was what soaking in a hot spring felt like.

They sat in the sun with glasses of juice in hand, more relaxed than they had felt in a long time.

Fed by the hot spring, the area around the lake was lush and green. The vegetation was noticeably thicker than anywhere else nearby.

The three of them searched along the shoreline and found quite a few medicinal herbs, all of them growing/ unusually well.

That night, they pitched their tents a short distance from the lake.

After the long soak, Poppy was so relaxed that she fell asleep almost immediately.

Hot springs were believed to have certain health benefits, so Nicole got up during the night to collect some of the

water.

She emptied several water tanks in her storage space and refilled them with hot spring water. Once they returned home, they would be able to soak whenever they wanted.

She had stockpiled plenty of tanks, barrels, and other containers. They now had enough hot spring water to last for years.

Nicole slept exceptionally well that night. If Cola hadn’t been standing guard, someone probably could have carried her off without waking her.

They spent another three days searching the mountains, combing through the forest and collecting every plant they found with medicinal value.

As the climate grew more extreme, many of the seedlings were already beginning to die. Even the ideal conditions inside Nicole’s storage space might not be enough to save all of them. If those species disappeared, they might be lost forever.

After returning to Westbridge, Nicole made a special trip to the local center of the alternative medicine research institute.

Mitchell wasn’t there, but several staff members were on duty.

After examining the seedlings Nicole brought, one of them took out two bottles.

“We run into this problem all the time. This one is a nutrient solution, and the other’s a growth enhancer. Try using both. They should improve the seedlings’ chances of surviving.”

The institute had developed the treatments and tested them in its own greenhouses.

They weren’t free, of course. Anyone who needed them could trade food or medicinal plants in exchange.

The institute received government funding, so although the staff didn’t eat particularly well, they weren’t in danger of starving. What they needed most were medicinal plants.

Nicole took the extra seedlings from her basket. “I’ll trade these for them.”

The staff member brightened immediately. They chose several species the institute didn’t already have, along with a few plants that could be used to treat a wide range of conditions.

In the end, Nicole traded 30 seedlings for a bottle of nutrient solution and a bottle of growth enhancer, Both sides were satisfied with the deal

With the treatments in hand, Nicole and the others drove back to Brighton Estates.

They had been gone for several days and had no idea what condition the house would be in when they returned

As they drove into the neighborhood, they spotted someone acting suspiciously near their front gate. Zeph immediately hit the gas.

The sound of the approaching vehicle startled the man. He took off running and disappeared around the corner.

The moment they pulled up to the house and opened the door, a powerful stench hit them.

Nicole covered her nose and quickly climbed back into the car.

Their front gate had been smeared with human waste. The sight was disgusting, and the smell was unbearable.
