Chapter 538
Nicole jolted awake and realized it was only a dream. Outside, the sun was still shining brightly.
Zeph woke up as well. “What’s wrong?”
The feeling of being hacked to pieces was far too real. Nicole’s heart pounded as she wiped the cold sweat from her forehead.
“I had a nightmare.”
Zeph could tell there was more to it. “You know the man who was sitting next to Marcus last night?”
“No, but we have history.”
She told him about the supplies she had taken after breaking into Jason’s office.
That was the downside of living around rich people. You never knew whose place you might’ve looted before.
It was bad enough that she couldn’t drive any of the three luxury off-road vehicles. Now, she couldn’t use the custom sword or the golf clubs either.
Her luck was unbelievable.
People were dying left and right in the apocalypse, yet rich people somehow refused to die.
Zeph had nothing to say. They were both experts at helping themselves to anything left unattended. They would just have to be more careful about using the stolen goods from now on.
After breakfast, Nicole took inventory of everything in her storage space. She gathered up the weapons and supplies they couldn’t use for the time being and locked them away so she wouldn’t accidentally grab one in an
emergency.
Hughie and the other three shared a single radio.
Nicole didn’t know how they divided their time with it, and she didn’t want to interrupt them while they were working, so she held off on contacting them.
Several days passed, and none of them reached out either.
More than once, she picked up the radio, only to change her mind and set it back down.
Whenever it was time for Mitchell’s lesson, Nicole drove to Grayport to pick him up and took him home afterward.
In the meantime, she used a scanning pen to copy the thick medical textbook one page at a time, then transferred the files to an electronic device.
The book was far too valuable. Worried she might accidentally damage it, she decided it was best to return it as soon as possible.
She didn’t just return the book. She also gave Mitchell a flash drive containing the scanned copy.
Mitchell was delighted. The disasters had struck so suddenly that many valuable books and records couldn’t be moved in time and were eventually destroyed by the flood. Some were the only copies in existence. Once they were gone, the knowledge they contained was lost forever.

Nicole thought for a moment. “Dr. Chapman, I have a scanning pen. I can lend it to the institute if you need it.”
Mitchell accepted without hesitation. He hoped the disasters would end someday and that the knowledge they preserved could be passed down to future generations.
Nicole spent her days either attending lessons or tending to the medicinal herbs.
The herb fields in her storage space continued to expand, while she planted fewer and fewer food crops.
Under Poppy’s care, the chickens, ducks, and geese had grown considerably. They were gradually adapting to the constantly changing weather. Their appetites increased, and they remained active and healthy.
Nicole took out another batch of chicken and quail eggs and placed them in the incubators to hatch.
Then the radio crackled, and Beatrice’s voice came through. Her condition had improved, and she wanted another batch of medicinal herbs.
Judging by her voice, she sounded much more cheerful.
Nicole was pleased. She prepared the herbs and added five pounds of crushed corn.
Since Sven was home, they left Poppy and Cola with him.
Zeph went with Nicole to visit Beatrice.
The other three were all at work, so Beatrice was home alone.
The antidepressants, along with the books and music, helped improve her mood considerably. Nicole gave her another needle therapy treatment and adjusted her medication.
Seeing Zeph again after two years brought back a flood of emotions for Beatrice. If he hadn’t taught the three of them so many self-defense skills back on the 18th floor, she might not have survived this long.
