The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 539

Chapter 539

On the other hand, Beatrice’s family situation was far more complicated.

If Nicole and Zeph had been in their position, Nicole wasn’t sure Zeph could’ve stood by her as steadfastly as Hughie had, without ever blaming Beatrice.

A person’s true character only became clear when something serious happened.

“There’s nothing seriously wrong with you physically. What you need to focus on now is your mental health. Try to look for the positive side of things when something happens. You’ll get through this,” Nicole said.

As they drove back into the neighborhood, a loud rumbling suddenly came from overhead. It sounded like helicopter blades.

Nicole looked up and saw a helicopter.

The Robinsons had flown one back and were slowly lowering it onto the roof of their villa.

The entire neighborhood erupted.

The Robinsons were in a league of their own. While everyone else struggled to find a working car, they casually brought home a brand-new helicopter. 1

Everyone was jealous.

Of course, jealousy changed nothing. They simply weren’t born into that kind of life.

After dinner, Nicole took Cola out for a walk. As luck would have it, they ran into Marcus again, still wearing his military coat.

He had somehow gotten his hands on a Tibetan mastiff and was walking it on a gold-plated leash, strutting as though he owned the street.

“Wanna let them fight?”

Now that he no longer had cars to play with, he apparently moved on to dogfighting. 1

Nicole couldn’t be bothered with him. His mastiff might’ve been just a dog to him, but Cola was family.

Unfortunately, two dominant dogs couldn’t stand the sight of each other.

The mastiff and the Belgian Malinois bared their teeth at the same time, their fur standing on end.

The mastiff suddenly lunged at Cola.

Marcus might’ve had a foul mouth, but he kept a firm grip on the leash. What he didn’t expect was for the mastiff to pull with such force.

He refused to let go, and the dog yanked him off balance. He pitched forward and hit the ground hard, sending one of his slippers flying.

Held back by its owner, the mastiff lost its momentum.

In a fight, speed was everything. A single moment of hesitation could decide the outcome.

After three years of natural disasters, Cola had grown into a powerful dog, his body packed with muscle. He shot forward like an arrow and slammed into the mastiff before it could react, knocking it off its feet.

A dog took after its owner. Cola either stayed out of a fight or went in to win.

Before the fallen mastiff could recover, Cola leaped more than six feet through the air and clamped his jaws around its throat.

All Nicole had to do was give the word, and his sharp teeth would tear straight through the other dog’s throat.

Marcus was still dazed from the fall. The mastiff had dragged him several feet, leaving his hands and face covered in scrapes.

The damage to his face sent him into an immediate panic. He scrambled to his feet, afraid the mastiff had already torn the other dog apart.

When he followed Nicole’s gaze and saw his dog pinned to the ground, he froze in disbelief.

It was humiliating enough that he couldn’t beat the people from Villa 50. Now, even his dog had been taken down in seconds.

The injustice of it all nearly overwhelmed him.

Then he noticed one of his slippers was missing, which only made things worse. Another pair had been ruined.

Marcus finally snapped. He sat down on the ground and refused to get up.

Marcus couldn’t understand why the apocalypse seemed determined to keep him down. Every time he managed to get back on his feet, something else came along and knocked him flat again.

It was one thing to lose to the privileged children of powerful military and political families in the base. They were simply born lucky. But now, he was even losing to people in his own neighborhood.

He was utterly miserable, overwhelmed by the urge to cry and give up altogether.

Nicole looked down at him. “My dog won. Do you still want them to fight?”

If he said yes, the Robinsons would be having dog stew for dinner.

Marcus couldn’t take any more humiliation. “I was joking. Did your dog really have to take it so seriously?”
