Chapter 569
Jasper nodded and gave Marcus an assignment.
“These are extraordinary circumstances, and riots are breaking out across the city. I need you to take charge here. Organize the residents, have the HOA oversee the cleanup, and make sure the neighborhood remains secure.
“If anything happens, contact the police station. We’ll get here as quickly as we can.”
With that, he gave Marcus a firm pat on the shoulder.
The rioters had committed every crime imaginable, but Westbridge had been assigned only a limited number of troops, and they were responsible for maintaining order throughout the city.
?
Brighton Estates was out of immediate danger, so the soldiers and officers had to move on. They didn’t have the time or manpower to remain behind.
Marcus wanted to ask Jasper to leave a few officers, but the request died on his lips.
He might have tried it with someone else, but Jasper would never misuse his authority as a personal favor.
For the first time, Marcus felt the full weight of his position. “Alright. Thanks for getting here so quickly.”
The soldiers and police didn’t stay long. After searching the neighborhood and confirming that no rioters were still hiding inside, they left for the next area that needed help.
As soon as they were gone, Marcus spoke to Eric about neighborhood security.
The Robinsons had bodyguards, but if every house around them fell, their own home would eventually be next.
Eric looked at the residents who had barely escaped with their lives and understood the responsibility now resting on the family.
“Call a homeowners’ meeting.”
And so, on the fourth day of polar night, Brighton Estates held its third homeowners’ meeting. The announcement echoed through the darkness over the loudspeaker.
Half an hour later, the residents began emerging from their homes.
Some were badly injured. Others wore torn, disheveled clothing. Some would never come out again.
Eric chaired the meeting and began by asking each household to report how many people had survived.
Six entire households had been wiped out, all of them targeted by the rogue security guards.
When Marcus heard which families they were, a cold sweat broke out across his back.
Fortunately, the Robinsons had never abused or humiliated the guards, and they had always treated their servants and bodyguards fairly.
According to the final count, more than 40 people had died throughout the neighborhood.
The number would have been much higher if the rioters hadn’t shown at least some restraint. Most had been more interested in stealing supplies, unlike the guards, who had deliberately slaughtered entire families for revenge.
Countless others had been injured, and some had suffered complete mental breakdowns from the terror.
Nicole was surprised to learn that Irene’s husband had died, while Irene and Camila were both injured.
1/2
Perhaps because Irene had always treated everyone with such arrogance, even the family’s servants had turned against them. They had stolen the Clarks’ supplies and escaped with the rioters.
The mother and daughter clung to each other and sobbed.
Irene choked out in front of everyone, “Mr. Eric, how are two defenseless women supposed to survive on our own?
Eric nearly rolled his eyes. How was that his responsibility?
Meanwhile, Camila looked tearfully at Marcus, apparently hoping he would step in and rescue her.
Marcus was speechless. He had no idea why she was looking at him when he still depended on his own father for everything.
He quickly looked away and called out a greeting to Nicole across the crowd instead.
Camila nearly ground her teeth in frustration.
Eric offered Irene a few vague words of reassurance.
“Please don’t worry. The HOA is responsible for neighborhood security, and the residents won’t simply stand by and do nothing.”
He really was a master at saying plenty without actually promising anything.
Once the casualty count was confirmed, Eric got straight to the point.
