Chapter 578
With such generous rewards, there would always be people willing to take the risk.
The power of ordinary citizens shouldn’t be underestimated. Some became neighborhood informants, while others formed bounty-hunting teams.
Most rioters carried little more than clubs or kitchen knives. Once ordinary people were willing to risk their lives, it was hard to say who should be more afraid.
Hughie contacted Nicole excitedly. “Our building formed a 50-person bounty team. We caught more than 20 rioters nearby in a single day, and we actually got the reward!”
They were all human. As long as the residents had the advantage in numbers and charged in with enough force, there was little to fear. Many rioters surrendered without much resistance.
Hughie and Jeremy had grown up in an orphanage and learned from an early age how to read people. Later, one had relied on relationships to survive while the other worked in sales and endured humiliation wherever he went
After the disasters began, they became civilian patrol officers. Both were excellent actors.
The residents of Oakhaven Gardens had always been united. Hughie and Jeremy shared their acting skills and experience, while Weasel and his men were natural performers.
Whenever they encountered rioters, everyone put on a fierce, unstoppable front, charged forward with their weapons raised, and shouted as though an entire army were bearing down on them.
Who wouldn’t be terrified?
Nicole asked curiously, “What happens after the rioters are turned over to the police?”
“Desperate times call for harsh measures. The ones who committed serious crimes are executed, then sent to the waste-to-energy plant. Those guilty of lesser offenses are assigned to exhausting or dangerous labor.”
Hughie admired Nicole’s foresight. The apartments near the police station were far safer. The younger residents from Oakhaven Gardens had also trained directly under Zeph.
Weasel and his men weren’t as skilled in a fight, but they were quick-witted and full of tricks, so the two groups worked well together.
It was nothing like the place Hughie had lived before, where he slept with a knife under his pillow and constantly watched for someone attacking him from behind.
Nicole warned him, “The unrest probably won’t end anytime soon. Be careful.”
“You and Zeph, too. A lot of people in the villa district have guns, so ordinary rioters might not dare target you. Organized criminals are another matter.”
That was exactly what worried Nicole.
