The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 609

Chapter 609

Five years had passed since the disasters began, but Nicole’s storage space kept everything in perfect condition. If anything looked too fresh or pristine, it would only raise suspicion.

So she took some supplies out and stored them around the villa, planning to let them age naturally for a while. That way, if she ever needed to bring them out in front of other people, nothing would seem unusual.

The polar night dragged on, and every day was a struggle.

Over the next six months, the remaining three vacant villas were gradually rented out, each to tenants vouched for by an existing homeowner.

Marcus might act careless and irresponsible, but he quietly looked into every new tenant before letting firem move in. He also

never missed a chance to make Nicole remember he existed.

“When you and Zeph are on patrol, keep an eye on those three new families for me. If any of them cause trouble, my dad’s gonna make it my problem.”

Nicole agreed.

If nothing else, they were all stuck in this together.

She might not have professional training, but Zeph did, and Jeremy and Hughie had picked up plenty of experience by then.

After watching the newcomers for several months, they found nothing suspicious.

At first, the wealthy residents were wary of the new arrivals. After enduring the polar night for so long, everyone got used to hardship. Their old sense of superiority gradually faded, and some even learned to laugh at how miserable life had become.

Sometimes, they even joked around with the people from Villa 50.

They could let their guard down if they wanted. Nicole never did.

Before anyone realized it, the polar night had dragged on for two years. Thanks to the nonstop efforts of the military, police, and civilians, streetlights along the main roads finally started coming back on.

Robberies still happened from time to time, and several intruders tried climbing over the neighborhood walls.

Some were caught by the patrol teams. Others were chased down by the mastiffs before they made it very far.

Dumbo might act like an oversized puppy around Cola, but that didn’t mean he was harmless. Just seeing him charge at full speed was enough to terrify most people.

Anyone who made it over the wall learned that fast. Dumbo would take them down, then proudly bring back whatever trophy he managed to tear loose.

This time, it was three bloody fingers.

Cola rested a paw on Dumbo’s head in approval.

As public safety slowly improved, reconstruction efforts moved forward as well.

Nicole rarely went out, but Marcus passed along every bit of news he heard, so she usually knew more about what was happening than most people.

The government-run glass factory had been completed and was already operating. The equipment was crude compared to what they’d had before the disasters, and skilled workers were in short supply, but at least things were moving forward.

During countless patrol shifts, Marcus found himself staring up at the triangular glass enclosure on the roof of Villa 50. Nicole seemed to be using it to grow medicinal herbs, but he never believed that was the whole reason she built it.

Lately, he started wondering if there was a connection between Villa 50 and the new government glass factory.

Nicole hadn’t just heard the wainings about what was coming. She believed thern enough to prepare years in advance. Maybe that was why she enclosed the roof in glass, to protect the villa from the smog and acid rain.

Even the wall the Robinsons built before the polar night had given the family an enormous sense of security over the past two

years.

Eric kept a close eye on every new government project. As soon as he heard the glass factory started production, he began thinking about enclosing their own roof the same way.

Following Villa 50’s example might bruise the Robinson family’s pride, but after everything they had survived over the past few years, Eric knew keeping his family alive mattered more than appearances.

Pride wasn’t worth dying for.
