Jasper's expression changed when he learned the truth.
According to official reports, this wasn't the first satellite to fall. A few days earlier, another one crashed in Kingston, setting a building on fire and leaving several people dead or injured.
Now Westbridge had been hit as well, and no one knew whether any others had fallen elsewhere.
The old district was already in ruins, and the new district didn't have bomb shelters. If tens of thousands of satellites started crashing down, it would be a disaster for all of humanity, and there was no real way to prepare for something like that.
The authorities immediately went on high alert and called an emergency meeting.
That evening, Nicole still couldn't shake the uneasy feeling when another earthshaking boom rattled the area.
She went up to the roof and scanned the surroundings with binoculars, but she couldn't tell where it came down.
A sense of unease settled in the pit of her stomach.
Nicole didn't dare sleep upstairs anymore. The escape pod was too cramped for all of them, so she took out the Marauder instead.
She reclined the seats, and the four of them spent the night inside the vehicle.
Hughie's voice came over the radio. "Nicole, something got hit again just now. No idea where. Why don't you guys come stay with us?"
Hughie's group had dug a basement, and it was fairly large. There was more than enough room for a few extra people.
Nicole declined.
"No, thanks. We've already moved downstairs. The Robinsons just got hit. What are the chances our place gets hit, too? We can't possibly be that unlucky. You guys just stay safe."
Hughie still wasn't convinced and kept trying to talk her into it, but Nicole turned him down every time.
She had barely ended the call when Sven contacted them, asking, "Why don't you come stay with us?"
His basement was solidly built, with good drainage and ventilation. He could even give them two separate rooms.
But with tens of thousands of satellites overhead, nobody knew how long this would last.
Staying with someone for a day or two was one thing. A month or two was another. And what if it dragged on for years?
