Chapter 91

The reinforced steel door, lined with metal spikes, slowly swung open. Heavy footsteps followed.
For some reason, the entire crowd went quiet. A tension settled over them without anyone saying a word.
People from the 18th floor had killed. They had seen it before with their own eyes.
Here she came.
Slim legs. A long, sharp blade in hand.
Of course, they sent her first. That girl who didn’t hesitate.
Damn animals!
Behind her was Beatrice. Word was she had been a national-level champion in college. One punch could drop a man cold. She was geared up, too. Gloves on, stance ready.
Then came the two men.
One held a baseball bat.
The other…a spiked club. It was a wooden bat reinforced with rusted nails hammered through it. One hit from that, and if the wound didn’t kill you, the infection would.
Last to step out was Zeph, tall, clean-cut, and calm. He had his hands in his pockets, dressed in a simple gray outfit, like he was heading out for a walk instead of walking into a fight.
And then the dog came out.
That pushed people over the edge.
These people claimed they had no food, but look at that dog. It hadn’t been long, but the once-stray was now well- fed and strong, his fur shining.
The anger twisted into greed.
They shouldn’t have asked for just a third. They wanted everything, every last bit of what the 18th floor had, including the dog!
This was the apocalypse.
Dogs were supposed to be food, and yet this dog had been eating what should’ve been theirs.
They swore in their hearts that they would deal with the 18th floor, and then they’d cook the dog.
Around them, people tightened their grips on their weapons, licking dry lips, already tasting victory.
Only Oliver hesitated.
The moment he saw how prepared Nicole’s group was, something in his chest dropped. They weren’t going to hand anything over.
“Oliver,” Nicole said, her voice steady, “you brought all these people to break our door. What’s that supposed to mean?”
She scanned the crowd packed into the 17th-floor hallway.

There were no elderly, no kids.
Just men.
Some held weapons openly. Others kept them hidden under jackets. They were all from the same building, but the faces told different stories.
Some looked well-fed. Most didn’t.
But every single one of them was staring at the 18th floor.
Nicole’s gaze moved through the crowd until she spotted Edward and the others.
She almost didn’t recognize him.
He was thinner and hollow-eyed, with hunger written all over his face. Gone was the confident guy he used to be.
Seeing the lineup in front of him, Oliver felt uneasy, but he forced a smile. “We’re just here to talk. Why bring out all this?”
Nicole didn’t bother playing along. “We don’t have what you’re looking for. And even if we did, we risked our lives for it. You’re not getting anything.”
“We’re out of options,” Oliver said, backing off a step. “That’s why we came to ask.”
