Chapter 92
“If you don’t want to, at least lend us a third of your food,” Oliver said, his expression stiff as he forced a smile.” Once we get through this, we’ll pay it back. If you don’t trust us, we can even write an IOU.”
“No.”
Just one word, and that was it.
The air turned cold. There was no more room to talk.
Relying on their numbers, someone in the crowd shouted, “Oliver, why are you still talking? Just break the door and rush them!”
“Yeah, break it! They’re the ones being selfish! Don’t blame us for what happens next!”
“Nicole, think this through,” someone else called out. “We’re all in the same building. No need to make things this ugly.”
Oliver felt a flicker of satisfaction but kept up the act, sounding like he was stuck in the middle.

“You’ve got supplies. What’s wrong with sharing a little? If you insist on keeping everything to yourselves, even if I agree, they won’t. You’re putting me in a tough spot.”
Nicole didn’t budge. “Go ahead. Anyone who wants to break the door can try.’
“Don’t think we won’t!” A man holding a crowbar stepped forward, hunger written all over his face. He drove it
toward the door.
Nicole didn’t draw her blade. Instead, she pulled something from her pocket and aimed it through the bars, right
at his head.
“Take one more step,” she threatened.
“Gun! She’s got a gun!” someone shouted.
The crowd instantly backed up, panic spreading as people tried to put distance between themselves and the barrel.
Oliver’s face went pale. “What are you doing?”
Nicole’s gaze swept across them. “I should be asking you that instead.”
“Let’s talk this out,” Oliver said quickly, heart pounding. “Don’t do anything rash.”
Nicole smiled faintly. “Relax. I’ve never been calmer.”
“It’s fake. Just a plastic toy.”
A voice cut through the crowd. It sounded like someone deliberately lowered his voice, making it hoarse and rough.
Nicole’s eyes locked onto him.
“Edward. If you’ve got something to say, come out. Don’t hide in the back.”
Edward’s face darkened. He had tried to stay out of sight, even pulled his cap low, but she still picked him out.
Grinding his teeth, he stepped forward and pointed at her. “Nicole, I didn’t think you’d turn into this selfish and greedy person. You’ve got food. Why not share and help people?”

Nicole let out a quiet laugh. “So what if I am? I didn’t steal it. I got it myself. Unlike you, trading your body for food and eyeing what’s on someone else’s plate.”
In times like this, survival came first. Pride didn’t mean much.
At first, it had been women. Then he came across some decent-looking guys and figured, why not? He believed there was nothing to be ashamed of, as long as he lived.
People might not say it out loud, but everyone knew.
Still, hearing it said like that was different.
A few people couldn’t hold back their laughter, their looks toward Edward changing instantly.
The world had collapsed. Rules and morals were all gone.
