Chapter 95
When Nicole had been stocking up, she had picked up a few fake guns on purpose. She thought that maybe, in a pinch, they could scare people off.
She hadn’t expected Zeph to have the real thing.
The world had fallen apart, but the government hadn’t disappeared. It was still there, just slow, buried under the flood like everything else. Weapons like that were still tightly controlled.
Unless things got completely out of hand, she wouldn’t use a real gun in front of everyone.
Alerting the authorities was one problem. The other was explaining it.
But if it really came down to it, she wouldn’t hesitate.
Nicole glanced at Zeph’s closed door.
Beatrice pulled her into the room, lowering her voice. “How does he even have a gun?”
“He used to be special operations,” Nicole said. “Probably has connections.”
Beatrice clicked her tongue. “So he can fight and shoot. Damn.”
With that one shot, the crazed man was gone, and the rest of them would probably stay quiet for a while.
Honestly, seeing that man die like that was a relief. He was both tragic and dangerous. There was no way he would’ve survived those injuries, anyway.
And if he had fallen into the crowd’s hands, it would’ve been worse.
At least it ended quickly. He still had his dignity intact.
Having someone with a real gun on their side gave them some peace of mind, even if there was still a risk it could cause trouble later.
They had been ready for a full-on fight. Instead, everything fell apart because of one man.
Lucky, the storm had passed in a twisted way.
They kept an eye on what was happening downstairs.
The ones who weren’t hurt scattered. The injured, seeing that the 18th floor wouldn’t help, cursed as they dragged themselves away.
Before long, the 17th floor went quiet again.
A lot of people had shown up for the confrontation, but plenty had stayed out of it, just going along with the noise.
The people living on the 17th floor had locked their doors the whole time. They weren’t getting involved.
They were too close to the 18th floor. If anything went wrong, they would be the first to suffer.
But trouble still found them.
When they finally opened their doors, they froze. There was blood everywhere, bodies still lying in the hallway.
What did they even do to deserve this?

Why did everything always happen on their floor?
The three households cursed under their breath as they figured out what to do.
They dragged the bodies out and dumped them into the water, then started cleaning the hallway.
What kind of life was this?
They had barely finished when the families of the dead rushed up.
When they found out the bodies were already gone, they exploded, yelling at the residents of the 17th floor.
That was the last straw.
The people on the 17th snapped. They stormed back into their apartments and came out holding cleavers.
“We didn’t do anything!” one of them shouted. “Why are you blaming us? We didn’t kill them! You knew what they were doing. Why didn’t you stop them then? Now they’re dead, and you come here to yell at us? Besides, if you wanted the bodies, you should’ve come sooner. Go dive for them if you want!”
Even the calmest people had their limits.
Seeing the blades swinging, the families backed off, still cursing as they left.
Before this, they had been thinking about how much they could get out of it. Now, they had lost everything. They had no supplies, and their men had been hacked to death by a lunatic.
How were the widows and kids supposed to survive now?
