Chapter 96
The girl couldn’t take it.
Overwhelmed with shame, she threw herself into the flood.
She had been all the man had.
When she died, something in him snapped. He lost his mind, grabbed a blade, and went after anyone he could find,
A few people died on the spot. Some bled out later. Others were less seriously injured, but there were plenty of crush injuries from the chaos.
With the rain still coming down hard, there was no way to get to a hospital since no one had a boat. All they could do was lie there and endure it.
Edward and Oliver were still unconscious. No one knew whether they would wake up or not. Many hoped they
wouldn’t.
The whole thing ended in failure.
The building fell quiet again, but it wasn’t peace. It was heavy and full of grief.
Nicole had something else on her mind.
The ones who had looked well-fed during the confrontation were most likely the same group that had been breaking into homes at night.
A few of them had died in the chaos, but not all.
That meant trouble later.
Cola hadn’t gotten his fight. He paced around, whining, clearly annoyed. Nicole had no choice but to distract him with food.
“Do you have something against Edward?” she asked, half amused. “You keep going for him.”
Cola bared his teeth, letting out a low huff.
It was more than something. It was personal!
Nicole pulled the dog into her arms, her gaze growing distant.
After her nap, the walkie-talkie crackled.
“Nicole. Are you teaching Poppy today?”
It was Zeph.
“Yeah.”
They hadn’t fought today, but it was only a matter of time. The only thing that mattered now was getting stronger.
There was a knock at the door. Cola ran over and opened it with his paw, then headed out with his bowl, ready for training.
Poppy stayed behind, locked in by Zeph. She looked a little down.
“Nicole, when can I grow up? I want to protect you and Zeph.”

Nicole crouched down and gently reassured her. “Just focus on learning and growing. You’ll get there sooner than you think.”
Poppy frowned. “Cola can do it. Why can’t I?”
“You’re not the same. Dogs grow faster. People take time,” Nicole said softly. She gave Poppy a small smile. ” Listen to your brother. He’ll help you get stronger.”
That seemed to help.
Poppy brightened, then leaned in and lifted her shirt slightly. “I think I’m already getting stronger. Zeph trains me every day.”
Nicole blinked.
Abs. On a kid.
Even she didn’t have those.
Overtraining wasn’t ideal for a growing child, but this wasn’t a normal world anymore. Nicole couldn’t say Zeph was wrong.
Out here, survival mattered more than anything.
Strength meant safety. If anything happened, being able to protect yourself was everything.
Fine. Then she would train, too.
Even without seeing each other, the mindset on the 18th floor had shifted.
Things were only going to get harder.
