Chapter 97

There were so many people packed together, plus the heavy rain and poor visibility. What was more, Nicole even shifted her position on purpose.

And yet, it didn’t matter. Zeph still saw through it.

Nicole smiled, playing dumb.

“Pull your shoulder back. Lean forward slightly when you raise the gun. Keep your elbows bent…”

Zeph walked her through it step by step.

Nicole memorized everything. Back home, she practiced on her own.

Neither of them asked questions.

Some things didn’t need to be said.

After that gunshot, the entire building went quiet. No one dared target the 18th floor again.

Still, life didn’t stop.

Staying cooped up inside all day would drive anyone crazy. Jeremy and Hughie, now much stronger, showed up at Zeph’s door and asked to go out and look for supplies.

The water kept rising. No one believed the rain would stop anymore.

This was the apocalypse. Who knew what was coming next?

Supplies were running low. Nothing was coming in. That kind of pressure wore on people.

Zeph agreed.

Poppy immediately wanted to go, too.

Cola lined up right behind her. “Woof!”

The dog had grown. He made his own choices now. Nicole couldn’t really stop it.

“Stay safe,” she said.

Cola went back inside and dragged out his protective vest and rain gear. He was ready to go. He looked at Nicole, clearly wanting her help getting suited up.

Nicole laughed and helped him get dressed. “Look at you. Heading out to earn your keep again.”

Cola lifted his head, proud and a little shy, as if saying, “Wait here. I’ll bring back meat!”

Nicole stood upstairs, watching them leave the building. Then, she pulled out a piece of mink fur and measured it out. She was going to make Cola a coat.

The rain hadn’t stopped, but the air was colder now.

Something about it didn’t feel right.

Nicole had a feeling that the deep freeze was coming. Compared to the flood, that would be a lot worse.

A dog like Cola could adapt to harsh conditions, but this wasn’t just cold.

It could drop to -90°F.

Even people wrapped up head to toe might not survive that, much less Cola, who had short fur.

The memory hit her hard. Last time, his body had been covered in frostbite, wounds oozing.

Nicole’s chest tightened.

Not this time. She wouldn’t let that happen again.

Beatrice stopped by and saw what she was doing. “You’re making clothes for Cola?”

“Yeah. It’s been getting colder. I woke up freezing last night,” Nicole said carefully. “First, the typhoon. Then months of rain. Who knows what’s next? Winters aren’t usually this bad here. Up north, it’s already below freezing this time of year.”

“Yeah,” Beatrice said. “In a normal year, they would already have snow by now.”

“Do you think the north’s flooded, too?” Nicole asked. “And now that it’s winter, what if everything freezes over?”

Beatrice didn’t answer right away.
