Mike continued, “It was a man and a woman. They looked like assassins, but Roxen thinks they’re part of the thief syndicate.”

Carlos added, “We let them slip away. Both of them know stealth techniques. By the time we started searching, they’d already blended in with the candidates and vanished.”

Roxen remained silent. Deep down, he suspected that the so-called “hunter” wasn’t either of them.

Still, their kills had been clean and precise, matching the rumors about the wandering hunter. That was why they’d been treated as temporary targets.

Valen thought for a moment. The thief syndicate…

He wasn’t actually worried about people like that.

Every year, there were always a few unruly candidates. The academy had its own ways of dealing with them.

What truly concerned him were the ones who hid among the candidates. Those who seemed ordinary, forgettable, with no sense of presence, yet carried ulterior motives, were the most dangerous.

The principal had said many people coveted the academy’s database, and plenty had their eyes on Blue Star Military Academy’s advanced tech.

Some wanted to learn and grow. Others aimed to infiltrate, sabotage, or steal resources.

The first group would be trained into world-class elites. The latter would only get executed.

“I understand. You’ve all worked hard,” Valen said, nodding solemnly.

He then recalled something and asked cautiously, “By the way, did any candidate catch your interest?”

Even as chief examiner, he had to admit the students’ skills. Any of them could serve as examiners themselves.

Mike scratched his head. “There’s a handsome guy-Number 230, His close-combat skills were especially strong, and-”

Before he could finish, Roxen elbowed him lightly. Mike immediately changed course. “And, well, he’s good-looking.” He circled right back to his original comment.

Carlos said flatly, “We were focused on tracking the hunter and didn’t pay much attention to the candidates.”

Mike had originally wanted to say Number 230 was probably an ability user and even describe the fight in detail.

But Roxen’s nudge shut him up. The examiners hadn’t seen that fight. It was a blind spot in surveillance.

As long as they stayed quiet, Valen would never know.

Mike didn’t understand why Roxen wanted to keep it secret, but he always listened to him, so he didn’t push

Valen frowned deeply. Number 230 again.

Several examiners had already mentioned him.

Number 230 had performed well in the first round, but he didn’t advance with the top group in the second. His results were merely average.

And yet, so many people had noticed him. Was Number 230 really that outstanding?

Valen hadn’t watched the entire assessment process, so he didn’t know all the candidates’ abilities.

But starting from the third round, he knew he’d need to keep a closer eye on Number 230.

“Thanks. Go get some rest,” Valen said to the three. “Your rooms are ready at the hotel. Think of it as a short break. It’s a good chance to get to know this year’s freshmen. Some might become your juniors.”

His voice was naturally deep and rough, carrying an innate authority that was hard to ignore.

After a brief pause, he added, “Or-your future rivals.”

Roxen’s lips curved slightly. “Then we’ll make the most of this vacation.”

Mike was thrilled. After exchanging brief goodbyes, the three of them left.

Since Valen told them not to stand on formality, they simply nodded and departed.

Just the thought of spending downtime with the new candidates had Mike buzzing with excitement.

During the short break before the third round, the hotel’s candidates plunged into a full-blown celebration. Down by the hot spring pool, they even threw a swimsuit party.

The pool was huge, about the size of a standard swimming pool.

Cakes, gourmet food, and red wine filled the space. Men and women wove through the crowd, making it feel like a lavish high-society banquet.

But unlike noble gatherings, this place had a rougher, wilder edge.

Girls in bikinis strutted boldly across the terrace. If a guy started talking to one, it didn’t take long for things

to heat up.

Most guys were shirtless, wearing only swim trunks, their toned bodies on full display under the lights.
