The elevator doors slid shut, and for a moment, all Lance could see was Catherine standing alone in the center, a cardboard box hugged to her chest. Her face was calm but there was something distant in her eyes, a wall no one could cross.
“So, it’s just a regular transfer within SilverLeaf Industries? In that case, we’ll stay out of it,” Harrison said, picking up on the awkwardness. He was still surprised that Catherine had chosen to leave so suddenly, but when he noticed Lance’s expression darken, he decided it was best to move on. He tugged Lara’s hand, trying to steer the mood in another direction.
“Didn’t you want to check out the Clvg bag showroom in Cabinda with Adelina? Let’s go inside and talk about it,” he suggested.
Lara watched the elevator as it descended, guilt twisting in her stomach. “I only found out there’s a Clvg showroom in Cabinda because Catherine mentioned it to me,” she said, making sure the conversation circled back to Catherine.
Harrison let out a quiet sigh and wrapped an arm around her, guiding her toward Lance’s office. “Sweetheart, I’ll buy you anything you want. But can you please not be so stubborn?”
Lara slipped out from under his arm, pushing his hand away. “No. She’s a CEO’s assistant and now she’s being sent to do grunt work. Do you know how humiliating that is for someone who works as hard as she does? And she only got caught up in this mess because of me…”
Aaron opened the office door for them, letting their conversation fade behind it as it shut.
Adelina, standing by, couldn’t hold back her frustration any longer. “Lance, did you see what just happened…”
The secretaries who had been sneaking glances quickly ducked back into their offices. Lara’s voice, however, had been loud enough for everyone to hear. She hadn’t held back, even calling Adelina ugly in front of the whole floor.
Adelina’s cheeks burned, eyes filling with tears. She was on the verge of crying.
Lance finally pulled his gaze from the elevator doors, his mood as heavy as ever. “Let’s talk inside.”
“But I…”
Adelina’s chest ached with the unfairness of it all, but Lance was already gone. She choked back her words and hurried after him.

“Someone’s got to do it,” Catherine said, carrying her box over to Team Eight’s empty section and taking a seat.
Unlike the other teams, none of her new teammates were around. Instead of lunch, they were out picking up fruit and tea for afternoon breaks in the different departments.
Leon glanced at her, a little concerned. He wondered if Lance had pushed her into the worst job to make things easier for Adelina, despite Catherine insisting she’d chosen it herself. “If you ever need help, just let me know.”
“Thanks, Leon. I appreciate it.”
Alex, the lead for Team Eight, had already set up a desk for her, knowing she would arrive during the lunch break.
Catherine sat down, joined the team’s group chat, and asked what she should do for the afternoon. Alex messaged back, telling her to head to the kitchen and take inventory of all the disposable tableware, making sure to keep a running tally for the next round of purchases.
