She barely had time to grab lunch before heading straight to the cafeteria. After counting up the lunch numbers, she got busy again, putting together afternoon tea for each department.
Catherine had picked Team Eight for one simple reason. The pay was the best. She had some savings, sure, but raising a kid would cost a fortune. She wanted to save every penny she could.
The whole afternoon flew by in a blur. By the time she got home that night, she was exhausted. She showered, flopped onto her bed, and finally let her mind wander to Lara.
She pulled out her phone and sent a text.
[Lara, thanks for having my back today. Transferring to Facilities was my decision. It has nothing to do with you, so please don’t let it mess up Harrison and Lance’s partnership.]
At that moment, Lance and Harrison were still at the dinner table, deep in their own world of business talk.
Adelina, who had no clue about business, kept trying to strike up a conversation with Lara. But Lara barely responded. Back at the airport, Lara had been polite, still thinking about keeping things smooth for the partnership. Now, knowing Catherine had taken the blame for her slip of the tongue and been sent to Facilities, Lara was in a terrible mood. She wasn’t good at hiding what she felt. Everything showed on her face.
Adelina had a bit of a temper herself. Seeing Lara’s attitude, she just gave up and stayed quiet.
The two men chatted easily, but the silence between the women was thick and awkward.
Suddenly, Lara’s phone buzzed.
She checked it. Catherine had texted. Lara replied right away.
[I don’t buy it.]
[Lara, the contract for an executive assistant is nothing like the one in Facilities. There are rules about marriage and having kids.]
She’d been ignored all afternoon, and now Lara was actually smiling because of Catherine?
“Does it matter to you who I care about?” Lara shot back, giving Adelina a look. “I’m talking business with Lance. If you don’t get it, maybe just don’t butt in.”
Adelina snorted. “Like you understand it either, Lara. The men are talking business, we’re just supposed to sit here and look pretty. Why are you inserting yourself?”
“Who says I don’t understand?” Lara folded her arms, sitting up straighter. “The design my husband submitted to SilverLeaf Industries? I drew it.”
It looked like things were about to get heated, so Harrison jumped in. “Adelina, my wife helped with the project. She’s just not big on social stuff, so if she’s not talking business, she honestly doesn’t know what to say.”
“That’s not it,” Lara said, brushing Harrison’s hand away as he tried to poke her arm. “I get along great with Catherine. We talk all the time. I just can’t vibe with Adelina. At work or outside of it, honestly.”
