The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 145

“Gavin.” Catherine’s eyes cleared up in an instant. Whatever confusion she felt, she pushed it aside and looked at him straight on.

But Gavin could tell she was troubled. “What’s up? Still stressing over Adelina?”

Catherine gave a faint smile and shook her head. “No, I’m fine.”

Her answer was polite, too polite, and Gavin wasn’t buying it.

“I’ve figured out what happened. Shirley was the one behind everything. She cut corners, made enemies, and in the end, Adelina took the blame. But Shirley works for her, so honestly, Adelina kind of had it coming.”

The news that Adelina’s fall wasn’t an accident caught Catherine off guard. The mention of Shirley left her even more stunned.

“I’ve already talked to Adelina. She won’t bother you anymore,” Gavin said, sounding sure of himself. He figured Adelina cared too much about her reputation to risk making things worse.

“You went to see her?” Catherine asked.

“Of course.” Gavin thumped his chest with a grin. “I’ll always have your back.”

They hadn’t seen each other in days, and Catherine had started acting distant, almost formal. But now, after what Gavin said, that careful politeness just faded away.

“My back? Please. You’re probably the one most likely to push me right into the flames.” Catherine’s smile disappeared completely.

Gavin let out a sheepish laugh. “Hey, what’s that supposed to mean? I’m just looking out for you. Oh, right, I heard you’re thinking of quitting?”

“I’m not sure yet,” Catherine admitted, worry flickering in her eyes.

So she wanted to leave, but something was stopping her. Gavin didn’t push for more. “If you ever need help, you know you can ask, right?”

“Thanks, but I’ll handle it,” Catherine said as she stepped around him and walked toward the exit.

Gavin glanced at the hospital, suddenly curious. Why was Catherine even here?

He pulled out his phone and made a quick call. In no time, he was standing in the hospital director’s office.

The director was sweating as he handed Gavin a file. It was for Patty.

Upstairs, in a VIP hospital room

“Stupid Shirley! I can’t believe she turned on me!” Adelina was fuming. “This is all Catherine’s fault. If she hadn’t gotten in the way, Shirley never would’ve had a chance to mess everything up.”

But what really set her off was Gavin’s threat. “Mom, we’re not seriously letting this go, are we?”

Sure, she’d deal with Shirley, but letting Catherine walk away so easily felt impossible.

Sarah tried to calm her. “Don’t worry. Gavin’s just talking tough. He’s not going to turn against our family for Catherine.”

Adelina relaxed a little. “So what about Catherine? We’re just letting her quit?”

“Of course not.”

Sarah still remembered the day at SilverLeaf Industries, when Lance had Catherine taken away. Her plan had fallen apart, and that failure still stung.
