“When I get the chance, I’ll make Catherine apologize to you in front of everyone. She’s going to take the blame, whether she likes it or not.”
Someone had to take the fall for all of this. With Shirley around, it just showed everyone that Adelina wasn’t as smart as she seemed. She’d trusted the wrong person, and her reputation was already on the line. The only way to protect her image was to pin everything on Catherine, make her the villain, and let Adelina play the victim.
Adelina looked worried. “But what if the James family finds out?”
“Even if they do, Belinda will still be on your side,” Sarah said, squeezing her hand. “You’re her favorite. She’d never let anything happen to you. She’s too busy worrying about you to care about anything else.”
A hint of relief brightened Adelina’s face. “As long as I can get rid of Catherine, everything else is worth it.”
The two of them were deep in their not-so-innocent conversation when the door to the hospital room creaked open.
Sarah straightened up right away and put on a calm face. “Lance, you’re here.”
Lance walked in slowly, his gaze cool and heavy as it swept over both of them.
That look made Sarah and Adelina’s hearts skip a beat. Had he heard what they’d been saying?
“Lance, how long have you been here?” Sarah asked carefully.
“Just got here.” Lance set his briefcase on the sofa. “You can head home. I’ve got things covered.”
Sarah picked up her bag, gave Adelina a quick look, then headed toward the door.
“I’ll leave Adelina in your care then.”
Lance nodded. Once Sarah was gone, he pulled a chair close and sat next to Adelina’s bed.
“Lance, why are you here so early today?” Adelina scooted a little closer, giving him a shy smile.
His steady assurance made Adelina feel a little better, like she could finally breathe.
After a moment, she hesitated, then asked, “Did you… did you hear what my mom was saying earlier?”
Lance lifted his eyebrows just a little.
“My mom just wants to help me save face. I’ll tell her not to give Catherine a hard time anymore, okay?”
She picked up her phone and, right there in front of Lance, texted Sarah, telling her to leave Catherine alone.
But after she hit send, the tears came back. Wasn’t this just another way for Lance to protect Catherine?
She wiped her nose, looking so small and pitiful, but Lance just sat there, jaw tight, expression cold, making it clear he wasn’t going to budge.
