That was it for Adelina. Whatever hope she had left just fell away for good.
She pulled out her phone and dialed quickly.
“I need you to figure out who the father of Catherine’s baby is.”
There was a bit of static on the line, then a man’s voice answered, “How am I supposed to know? I’m not a mind reader.”
“I’ll take care of everything. Just do what I tell you when it’s time. Get back here first.”
Adelina stood by the window, watching as night swallowed up the city. The darkness outside didn’t even come close to the chill pooling in her eyes.
…
Meanwhile, Lewis had been texting Catherine every day.
He’d remind her to bring an umbrella if it looked like rain, send her a cheerful good morning, wish her sweet dreams at night.
It was honestly getting to be a bit much. Catherine felt a headache coming on, so she asked Michelle to join her for lunch.
The moment Michelle saw her, she lit up. “Catherine, does this mean we’re practically family now?”
“I wanted to talk to you about Lewis,” Catherine said, motioning for her to sit.
From the way Michelle was grinning, you’d think she thought everything was already set in stone.
“What’s up?” Michelle noticed Catherine’s mood wasn’t what she’d expected and sat down across from her. “Did Lewis do something wrong?”
“Michelle, he and I just aren’t right for each other.” Catherine didn’t sugarcoat it. “Honestly, I’m not even thinking about dating or getting married right now.”
She was completely serious.
Michelle felt a little awkward. She’d been the one to set them up. She’d pushed Catherine into it, maybe a little too hard.
But she really did think they’d be good together.
“Is it because his mom is sick?”
Catherine shook her head quickly. “No, it’s not that. I… I actually like someone else.”
Michelle stared at her, caught off guard. She never pictured Catherine, always so practical, as the type to have a secret crush.
“Lance.”
Catherine stood and nodded politely.
Michelle jumped, spinning around without even looking at him. “Lance, I was just joking with Catherine, really!”
Lance didn’t take his eyes off Catherine.
His stare was so intense, it felt like he was trying to see straight through her.
His lips were pressed into a flat line, making him look even colder than usual.
“Lance, why hasn’t Adelina been at the office lately?” Michelle broke in, trying to distract him, hoping to help Catherine out.
“Her leg’s not healed yet. She needs to rest.”
Lance stepped forward, moving past Michelle until he was standing right in front of Catherine.
“So you’ve been wanting to quit because something’s going on. Why don’t you just tell me what it is? Maybe I can help.”
