The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 96

Catherine barely dared to breathe, her eyes locked on Lara like she was facing down an opponent.

Years of professionalism were the only reason her expression didn’t give her away. She wanted to deny everything, but Lara’s intense stare made words catch in her throat. There was no point in pretending. Lara could see right through her.

“Looks like you haven’t told the company about your pregnancy yet. Don’t worry, I’m not one to gossip.” Lara’s tone was soft, almost gentle.

Catherine pressed her lips together and nodded. “I just haven’t had the chance. Thank you for understanding, Lara.”

Lara smiled, trying to put her at ease. “No need to be so tense. I’m actually trying to get pregnant myself. Maybe you could share some tips. Did you and your husband try for long before it happened?”

As an OB-GYN, Lara was more experienced with these things than most, even if she hadn’t gone through it herself. She brought it up to show Catherine she really didn’t mean any harm.

But Catherine’s nerves only tightened. Lara’s questions hit a spot she was desperate to avoid. Her whole body stiffened and her brow pulled together.

“We weren’t trying. It just happened. We didn’t plan on having a baby,” Catherine admitted quietly.

Lara responded without thinking, “A baby’s a blessing. You have to keep it.”

Catherine nodded. She would keep it.

“Judging by how you look, you must be two or three months along, right?” Lara pressed.

Catherine just nodded, all motion robotic.

“And what about your husband?” Lara’s curiosity came out, her voice perking up. “Is he happy about the baby?”

Catherine’s mouth opened, then closed. She had no idea how to answer. Whatever she was feeling must have shown on her face, leaving her looking lost and a little sad.

Before Lara could ask anything else, voices drifted over from nearby. Through the soft haze of steam, two men appeared in white robes, walking toward them.

As she walked past a pavilion at the corner of the hot springs, she caught a sudden movement near one of the pillars. A shadow shifted and Catherine nearly yelped.

“Gavin?”

He stepped out of the darkness, his features becoming clearer under the dim lights. There was a playful, almost smug look on his face.

“Catherine, you’re pregnant with Lance’s baby, aren’t you?”

Her heart slammed into her chest so hard it stole her breath. She couldn’t get any air in.

She forced herself to stay calm and shook her head. “What are you talking about? I have no idea what you mean.”

“I heard everything you said to Lara, so don’t bother denying it.” Gavin’s eyes were bright with excitement. “You don’t have any other man in your life besides Lance. The baby is his, right?”
